    Horses for courses.

    If you want something for fun; petrol was traditionally the way to go,
    but the Golf diesel GTI seems to show it's not always the way (for car
    values of fun, natch).

    If you want something to drive distances turbo-diesel is probably the
    way to go; the engines are just more relaxed.

    s'bollocks, that is. Any decent large petrol engine can feel just as
    relaxed.

    Well, probably. You won't get the fuel consumption though.

    Having said all that it's 8 years since I've had a new car; when I
    stopped having a company vehicle.

    If it's a vehicle I'm buying for my use (where I have to pay for the
    fuel) I'd go for the turbo-diesel if there isn't a massive cost penalty.
    I recently (ish) bought a petrol car because the td lump version was
    just too expensive though.
