    I'm grateful for the offer.

However, being such an odd shape[1] I need to try stuff on first. As BGN,
found with that coat, you fuckers never make the same thing for more than 2
minutes so saying, "send me A***o leather trousers in size FC" may not work
    out.

[1] short, fat but with a 32" inside leg and a preference for leather
trousers that go over my boots rather than those horrid tapered things that
never fit my fat calf muscles

DFV it then. No tents. It's been a while since I was in the Borders area on
    a bike.

What with the *OSMs, TOGTour, Chimay, MGP, IOMTT, platyfest etc you might
struggle to fit it into 2009.

The idea has occurred. However, there are quite a few who I feel
would genuinely appreciate it, but who have a major "North vs. South"
snobbery issue which would prevent them even considering the idea.
    That too.

It's still too big a step for many people to contemplate. Although of
course I agree with you entirely.

But you didn't exactly lead the outdoor lifestyle and lose weight, did
    you? Until recently, I mean.

heh - I don't know anyone in the south who takes north vs south thing
    seriously. It's just mucking about.

The former - just outside Winster in fact. His place has enough land
to have it's own tarn in it!
I usually go a bit out of season to avoid the former, and (unless on a
motorcycle), I find that, like the highlands, the rain doesn't really
    diminish the grandeur.

A Southerner speaks: I quite like the North. It's a long way away,
though, and given a choice of 300 miles North or 300 miles South ending
up in France, I'd take the latter option pretty much everytime. Mainly
I guess because it's abroad and fucking about on a bike abroad doesn't
make me fear for my licence as much as fucking about on a bike anywhere
    in this country.

From Wiki: "In local dialect in Cumbria, the word is also used
generally to refer to any small lake or pond, regardless of its
    location and origin."

So, he's got a pond. Big fat hairy deal!
I haven't been for about 25 years. I was on my way to Coleraine in my
GS550E and stopped overnight in Kendal. Or was it Keswick? Anyway,
I've been meaning to go back for years, both with & without bike, the
latter to do a bit of following in Wainwright's footsteps.

Hey, it's a pretty fucking big pond. Big enough to have it's own
island, which you can row across to.

I'd post a link to an aerial map, but that would be a bit rude for
    someone else's property.

Are we talking geographical north/south or cultural north/south? It's
not even a proper geographic 'Great Divide', "where the rivers change
    direction..."

    Nice area.
To borrow a line from Billy Connolly, there's no such thing as bad
weather - just the wrong clothes [1]. Funny how there are very few
locals who have to be rescued from the mountains [2] too!

[1] It is, however, possible to make a bad decision as to vehicular
    transport vis-a-vis the weather...
[2] Yes Ace, they are only little by comparison to what you've got
nearby but they are officially mountains, and they're ours.
