    Reward good drivers, says expert

"Scrapping scare campaigns and instead rewarding good drivers would
dramatically slash death rates on Australian roads, University of
Canberra's chief of psychology Professor Bob Montgomery said in the wake of
    the horror Christmas road toll.

"All of the evidence shows that the strategies of scaring people or
threatening them with punitive techniques simply don't work", he said.

"We also need to start young with proper safe-driving programs."

    "Canberra Times", 12/1/04, p.1

This neatly crosses over Boxer's posting.

The Victoria's "Drive Right" program, perhaps? Win a car (no bikes, the
bastards) and get free showbags for basically not crashing....

Have you noticed that the most erratic and dangerous drivers have the
"Drive right 2" sticker on them though?

So people are claiming. I've noticed a few of them tend to crawl along,
and thus hold traffic up. From a report in today's Age newspaper on road
safety, this could be as dangerous as excessive speeding.

ie: varying significantly from the average speed travelled on a
particular road, whether faster or slower..

I saw one several years ago, a letter to the editor in the
    NRMA's member magazine...

Some old fossil wrote in espousing his vision
for world peace and safety on the roads: He wrote
that he was always carefull to drive at *least* 10Km/h
under the posted speed limit and that he believed that
made him a much safer driver and <waffle> went on about
how kids of today all want to get somewhere fast and
they should just learn to be patient and slow down
    and chill out.

The Editor not only published the old fart's letter,
but saw fit to tear strips off the old bugger, told
him in no uncertain terms that he was as great a menace
on the roads as the hooning young kids he was all
stressed about then proceeded with a general speech
about slow ones being as bad as fast ones.

Bit of a giggle methought. Would have loved to see
the old coot's face when he read the reply. Wouldn't
have liked to sit through the tirade that his poor
suffering wife probably had to endure afterwards.
