Let's look at the reasoning here:

Only a pikey would want to maintain a bike themselves.
Only a pikey would want to filter through the densest of traffic.
Only a pikey would want to be able to ride for 300 miles without
    having to stop for petrol.
Only a pikey would think twice about throwing their money about.
Only a pikey would not give a damn about what other people thought
    about their bike.

    Yeah, right. <fx: rolls eyes>

And I suppose that implicitly only a pikey would regard a bike as a
form of transport and not as a phallic extension to be waved in the
    air at weekends?

Does one count this from getting one's licence or from actually purchasing
    your first bike?

I ask because I passed my test in '95, which means I _could_ have 10 years
on the road next year except that I didn't actually get a bike until '98.

I counted from getting my full licence. If it was owning a bike I'd
have to wait another 4 or 5 months based on when I got the SV.

Guilty as charged m'lud. (For values of 'pikey' applicable to this
    NG.)

So, can we have a list for the Pikey Police to identify themselves? (I
suppose the Typo Cops need no enhancement of their notoriety.)

There was wasn't there. I'd forgotten that - I applied about 6 months
before my birthday for the test - Hove it was where I took it.
Nor was I, but girlfriend of the time could go on pillion of my Moped as
she had passed her car test, but when I got a 250 she couldn't, so there
was a bit of an incentive to pass!
    :) Did he pass?

    <Shame>

At the time I passed my test I was living with my folks who were (and indeed
    still are) rabidly anti-bike.

If I wanted a bike I had to fine somewhere else to live, which I did ... but
    it was Coventry.

So because I was moving house and because all of my mates were up North and
because I still had to travel on business and because I didn't have a garage
at my house in Coventry and because I couldn't afford a car and a bike I
    just stuck with the car.

I suppose, in retrospect, I could have found something slightly cheaper to
run than my Audi Quattro and used the spare money to fund a bike, but it
    just never occurred to me.

In fact, I think I'd pretty much forgotten about getting a bike until I was
offered a fully funded company car and was reading DiRE one night and saw
the bit that said, "Bike prices are now at the lowest they've been for
years - if you're ever going to get one now is the time" that I had my
    epiphany.

The next day at work I asked a colleague if I could use his garage, I
arranged to sell the Audi to the mechanic who'd looked after it for me and
that weekend I went out and bought the CBR4.

  15. Aye, them were t' days.

    A CB125T was 18bhp and revved to 16,000rpm.
80mph was a little optimistic, however.
