Is that something like a flavoured baseball bat?

IM(L)E, Indian food tends away from the (uniformly) stupidly hot stuff
that "curry houses" punt here. It has complex flavours (emphasis on
flavour) that sometimes have *extreme* heat.

One of the nicest dishes I have ever eaten was in Bangalore. Each
mouthful had me initially thinking "Oh fuuuuuuck" as I tasted it, then
the chillies just... disappeared and spices filled my mouth. And each
successive mouthful did the same. And (damn it!) I never noted the name
    of the dish.

Funny thing is, that eating with Indian ex-pats in the Middle East
tended towards the "bog-roll in the fridge" end of the spectrum. I think
they were missing home, and over-compensating.

Imli was very nice, and pretty close to my experience of eating in parts
    of India.

Nothing like your experience, but a visit to Bangladesh opened my eyes
to the world of 'proper' curry - completely different ball game

Recipes - names of favourite dishes?

Somewhere I've got a book called "The Curry Secret" which is about making
curries in the style of British curry houses. You make a basic gravy which
you can freeze and just add various spices to make the curry style that you
    like. Probably explains a lot.

Aloo ghobi. The DVD of "Bend it like Beckham" has instructions by the
director, including funny kibitzing by her mother.

Thali. All-you-can-eat meal served on a stainless platter. 2 or 3
curries with rice, raita, chutneys, & dhal. Found in many train
station cafes, but especially good out west.

well, we had a take-away from Masala Lounge in Winchmore Hill last
night - bloody lovely. Their Lamb Shashlik is about the best I've ever
    tasted.

oh...but there's a relevant Elvis Costello lyric there.

Anyway, if I were eating at one of that restaurant groups places it'd
have to be Veeraswamy (I still swear the recipes in my (circa
1950-something) Veeraswamy cookbook are the best).

Or, if you're ever out on the piss in Upper St., Masala Zone'll mash
up something credible and cheap and consistent.

I appear to have a meaning for sock puppet in my mind that doesn't match
yours and I can tell you it's rather disturbing. [1]

[2] I blame it on my brother for handing me the DVD for channel 4's
Misfits, apparently he reckoned I would be amused.

Is there? Time to throw down an Ace I'm afraid.
With a group I'd agree. With just the two of us, and Pat being a
veggie, CM seems to offer a better choice of plated selections.
There are a few of those around, and we plan to hit one of them one
    lunchtime early in the week.

    # I don't want to go to Chelsea
OK - fair enough. There used to be (well, it's still there, but
appears to have gone to seed) a fantastic Indian restaurant near
    Turnpike Lane called the Jashan that did fantastic veggie food;
several ukrm-er's have been there 'cos it's sort of just down the hill
from where the Ally Pally bike show used to be. It's a real pity it's
    gone crap.
definitely a good lunchtime choice, and if you want something even
quicker, then the "Tiffinbites" chain aren't too bad at all.
