I don't know why you and Ace and getting so worked up about this.
sweller's well known here for knowing the law with regard a number of
areas: employment, MOTs for commie heaps, ballet schools and sexual
harrassment (he specifically won't let me visit, the ****). And he's
also made of good moral fibre (see above). What's the problem?

    Mark,
Technically and theoretically speaking only, it depends how the speedo is
driven. I don't think rightly anyone is going to spell out to you the way of
going about it, so you probably should not have expected a direct answer as
    to HOW.

The recommended way of zeroing a project bike with a new engine, would of
course be to obtain a new speedometer.
I don't believe that is illegal unless used to defraud, that's equally open
    to abuse.

Having legitimately sold a vehicle myself without its orig speedo (crash
damaged) I legitimately installed an electronic cycle speedo and
set as close as possible to its mileage as I could - because some thieving
bastards who may have had access to it a known vehicle storage place that
kept it for some weeks returned me the crash damaged bike *without* the
    damaged speedo.
This was because I mostly repaired it at low cost to myself and didn't want
to pay the exhobitant price for replacement Honda clocks. I did use a
breaker suzuki housing though for rehousing the rev counter and temp gauge
    though.

I would name the *well known* car dealer come vehicle storage agent in
person (dropped there believe it or not by the police after my accident) but
it probably would not do me any favours.
It MOT'd too more than once so I don't believe it was a requirement.

So you see, there are genuine reasons to not be able to display the original
mileage but you should by law never mislead anyone to the mileage.
I made this quite clear when I sold my crash damaged repaired and the guy
who bought it got it cheap too on that understanding that I was not fully
aware of the mileage, but I was quite sure I had not done more than 15k
    miles.

Of course, illegal clockers probably HAVE forced vehicles round the clock
merely by physically driving the gears round manually or such methods.
I think basically what most are trying to say here, is if you have to ask,
    you probably shouldn't attempt it.

I am building my own project - I think I will opt for brand new clocks if
possible, if not I will consult the right people to sort it for me.
You're probably better asking this question of the custom scene, than of
those with newer bikes that might take offence at to your point.
