Resetting Mileometer

I have a set of bandit 1200 clocks which I want to use for a project bike.
They are from a 2001 model 1200 with the digital mileage indicator.

Is there a way to reset the mileage to zero so I can start fresh with the
    new bike?

    Thanks,

    Mark

  2. Yes.
    Think about it.

Ok, I've thought about it. How do you reset them then?

Do they 'backup' to another component on the bike like, I believe, some
    BMWs etc. do?

  4. It was semi tongue in cheek.

Either it can't be done, or, there's some traditional way of clocking it
    back round to zero.

Either way, public forums really aren't the most sensible place to ask
    about suvh acitivites.

Surely no-one will tell you (assuming it can be done - which is probably
    quite difficult), for obvious reasons!

    So, you don't know.
Do you know the 'traditional' way?
    Why not?

What obvious reasons? There is nothing wrong with setting the mileage to
    /zero/

I have had a number of speedos rebuilt and all of them were returned
zero'd. In fact the chap who did one point blank refused to set it to
    the original mileage.

Microwave it. 2 mins at 800W ought to do it.
    Or maybe not.

If it's to defraud a buyer by making a bike appear less used than it is,
then there is something wrong with it.

I don't believe that you honestly think this.

Don't you think we'd all be doing it if it was so easy. For first 6 (etc)
months of a bike's life they'd do 0 miles. And in principle, the ability to
set to /zero/ means the ability to set to any amount...

Oddly, I do or I wouldn't have written it.
Resetting to zero and reducing a mileage by X are two very distinct acts.

No, that wasn't the question. I'm well aware of the illegality of
    odometer tampering.

The question was why it wasn't a good idea to ask how to reset a digital
odometer to zero on a public forum?

    That is very, very unlikely.

I agree, but who would you trust?

Remind me not to buy a newish bike off you.

Oh FFS. Ask yourself why these activities would be desireable?

  16. Good good..
Well, generally speaking, people don't like giving up info that can be
used for illegal activities in public.

No doubt you're different or special or something.

  17. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
As is riding a bike round the clock and trading it in without letting
    on.

The speedo was utterly untampered with, but some sucker bought it.

If there is no documentary evidence to a vehicles described mileage it
must be specifically and clearly disclaimed; otherwise an offence is
    being committed.

As always in these matters /caveat/ /emptor./

Again, there is a difference between asking and giving up. I'd say an
anonymous public forum is the *most* sensible place to ask such questions.

Firstly are you /quite/ sure that resetting a speedo (as opposed to
reducing) is illegal. There is a distinction. Undesirable does not
    necessarily make illegal.

The practice of traders zeroing a vehicles mileage at the point of sale
    is no longer permissible.

As is advertising a vehicle as "low mileage" if there is no documentary
evidence to back up this claim. In fact if there is no documentary
evidence of a vehicles mileage (which forms part of its description) the
    mileage must be specifically disclaimed.

The second point, to which I was being (perhaps) a little disingenuous,
there is also a marked distinction between asking for and giving up
    information.

No doubt, but a key difference is I have experience of doing this.
