4x4 insanity is different enough to normal insanity enough that there is a
temporary change in the type of your insanity... *interesting*

Yeah, same in NSW (and Vic and QLD I believe). Would suggest that car be
redefined as less than say 2500, and a class of "heavy passenger
vehicle" or something be defined in between car and light truck. Either
that or just drop the definition of light truck down by 2ton and/or
define the large 4wd's as light trucks.

Actually you know, that would be the ideal result, define LandCruisers,
Patrols and etc sized vehicles as light trucks - those who really want
to go 4wd'ing do a course, same as we have to to get a bike licence. The
Mosman/Toorak mums who can't drive for shit and just want to feel
"safe" while ferrying carloads of kids mostly won't be bothered and will
get a 7seater people mover instead.

Seems like a win for 99% of the population (except for the Mosman mums,
but my heart isn't really bleeding there), 4WDers lose the stigma
gradually and the rest of the driving population doesn't have to put up
with ignoramuses. People who aren't sure whether they really want to go
serious 4wd'ing can buy a RAV4 or Suzuki Vitara on a car licence and dip
their toe in the water before doing a full 4wd/truck licence

Which will still include almost all large 4WDs, including the ubiquitous
LandCrusher. Kerb weight of the turbo diesel is 2385 kg. Make it 2000 kg and
the Holden Crewman Cross8 ute scrapes in by 44kg. With a full tank, no.
Helen loves her RAV4, never been off the bitumen.

<shrug> Whatever, then make it 2ton or define it by vehicle, it's not
really all that long a list of 4wd's that are really light trucks. Would
suggest as already noted in previous email that it should be weight plus
centre of gravity (because it's the combination that's the handling
issue that causes the need for extra skill/experience to drive one
    effectively.

Call it two tonne and a COG more than, what ?? 20cm above ground level ?
30cm ? if the crewman still scrapes in then so be it, doubt it would though

depends, wouldn't affect a hi ace or a ute, would affect the couple of
ton mini trucks (2t ? 5t ? whatever the size is), having punted one of
those around on the weekend, even despite growing up driving farm trucks
it reminded me why I'm not too sure the average punter should be let
loose in one (or maybe it was just the shitbox i got from balmain
    rentals that has jaundiced me)
    yeah that'd be a start

Require that drivers of same wear at least a pushbike helmet. Head
injuries are a common consequence of rollovers, and there's no reason why
people driving such vehicles shouldn't be using proper protective gear.

Even without the licence change that should discourage a fair few Toorak
Tractor drivers! Without materially inconveniencing people who need
one for work or to tow a boat or float.

<shrug> Either we take the gloves off and remove all the rules, or you
have rules to manage the chaos, can't see why we encourage (through tax
breaks) people who are incapable of driving one to be owning what
amounts to a light truck. Those who are capable and competent at the
wheel of a large 4wd (ie those who own them so they genuinely can go off
road) are unlikely (in my experience), to be the same ones who act like
    complete and utter wankers.

I seriously do think that if it was made a trifle difficult (not
impossible, just a small show of committment by fronting up to a basic
competency test)the wankers would ditch the 4wds in droves, the petrol
prices are already starting to have this affect.

I don't have anything against people owning 4wds, what I do object to is
the mentality of a subset of the owners, as shown in the study that
started this discussion. My opinion is they don't have any committment
to 4wd'ing, they often seem to be driving the ones with low profile
tyres nowadays (you don't go rockhopping in 24" rims with /45 profile
    tyres methinks).

Why should we have to put up with ignoramuses in aus.moto?

Biggus, can you get an innuendo without it being attached to a brick? :)
