Sooo, extremes of climate don't bare close examination? One side of Oz
    isn't comparable to the other?
    Yes, you are quite wrong.
Yes (or were you hoping someone would answer that for you?)

Oh, you missed _attitude_, oh the irony.
Logical or rational, or both, or, neither?
Bit hard to get the picture when all there is, is snow.
Track drive vs 4wd, why not?! Your first good idea!

OK... so tell me what country's studies are able to be considered here
    in Oz ?
    <chuckle> Yeah right.

The behaviour described is quite well in line with what I observe in
Sydney. There's a reason why many/most car owners dislike and mistrust
4wd drivers (in Sydney)(1), their behaviours are often very much as
described - stereotypes usually do have a basis. That doesn't mean they
are true for the entire population set(2). It also doesn't mean they are
necessarily true outside the region in question. Just because the
majority of inner-city Sydney 4WD owners are arrogant insular arseholes
(in my experience), doesn't mean that necessarily holds in the outer
    suburbs or other cities.

The biggest problem I have with the study is the use of emotive language
in the quotes by the researcher. This calls into question for me the
    objectivity of the study.
Well, if we're going back to primary school...

    (1) Not anecdote, there's been a number of surveys and studies conducted
and published by NRMA, SMH and etc
    (2) For example I know a WRX owner who isn't a complete wanker, hard to
    believe I know.

Heheh. Although being a Kombi it would fold like an aluminium can if you
ran into with a pushbike - as long as no one knows that they'll be
    scared of arguing!

  5. Well worth a stab Betty. Immediately after posting I reread and
cringed - left myself wide open there. Such an unfortunate
    error!

Holy shit; that's the first time I've heard a Sydneysian admit that there
    ARE other cities!!

  8. Who? Do I know you?
Purpose was fulfilled though. Got it off my chest and offered a rebuttal
to my target audience. Someone more righteous and determined than me is
welcome to find these other ways you speak of.
Yeah probably. Perhaps I write to suit the medium, and maybe I am
capable of a rational and considered voice. Or maybe you're on the money
with your analysis of my writing. All good, criticism noted.
I can't help but feel you're mocking me though, with your repeated,
emphasised misspelling of my name in an electronic medium.
    Lets analyse one by one:
    1) valid scientific study
It was a story in a newspaper, referring to a study whose source was
    not stated.
    2) personal attack
Yep, describing 4wd's exlusively as "lethal weapons" and their drivers
as "risk-takers" on the road is mighty personal to me, a 4wd driver.
    3) irrational
A response to a personal offence is likely to take this form, yes. But
I'm normally fairly careful about losing rationality so I'm curious,
which part did you find irrational?
    4) ill-considered
I disagree, please give me an example.
    5) inappropriate forum
Ah... the article was posted to aus.motorcycles right? Where else would
    the reply go?
    6) not capable
    Probably. So why bother?
I feel my passion for 4wd'ing is at risk from public opinion, which is
at the beck and call of subjective reporting. Damn straight I'm not
secure about that. But if you are extrapolating that to my feelings
of self-worth, then I think this must be Usenet.
Yeah! Stick it to them. Fucking 4wd owners. Them and pompous, dangerous
motorbike owners, they're the worst. And don't get me started on those
that own both. Satanic beasts too evil for Hell.

    <chuckle> Yeah but I'm in a **4WD** I'm invincible !! (the fact that
it's only marginally bigger than a Barina doesn't seem to impinge on
    their consciousness)

Geez mate, I seem to recall going further than that, and and upsetting
people by suggesting that Melbourne was the real capital of Australia
because Sydney is a different country all together !!

Run out of time but I think this is the right thread

I'd agree with your point actually, I found the use of such emotive
language curious from someone who should be applying dispassionate
scientific principles to their research. It could be that the journalist
sexed up the story (ie deliberately misquoted) or it could be the
journalist pushed for a stronger wording by using leading questions.

It's an interesting issue, however there always has been a simple
solution that the govt. refuses to go near for fear of a backlash.
Simply create a specific licence for passenger vehicles over a certain
weight (you might catch a few hefty cars in there too which quite
frankly would be a good thing). In order to drive something like a Land
Cruiser or etc which does have handling characteristics different to
that of a standard passenger car, you should have to prove you can
manage it, same as you do a truck. In fact having punted a light pantech
around on the weekend which just squeaked in under the "you can drive on
a car licence" limit, I wonder whether that bar shouldn't be lowered too.

Should probably be some parameters in addition to weight, because it's
as much the height above the ground of the centre of gravity as it is
    the mass.

Based on your dribble, I'm not sure you would know one if you fell over
    them.

And this relates to the likelyness to use a mobile phone how exactly?

They do in WA. Your car licence limits you to 4500 kg. Lets you
