replacing a starter motor - difficult??

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by BadaBing-BadaBoom, Feb 3, 2007.

  1. Hello,

Can any of you guys tell me, in your opinion, how difficult a job
is it to replace a starter motor on triumph trident 900 (1982 model)?

I have very little experience at motorcycle maintenance.

Would it be better and still reasonably cheap paying someone else
to replace the starter motor for me?

Any advice and opinions much appreciated!

    thanks in advance

    Pete

Starter motor or starter motor clutch (as it seems to be the latter
that tends to fail on these AFAIK).

Have a google, I think we had this recently and the consensus was that
on the early Triumphs it's a barsteward of a job.

That would be difficult indeed, as they didn't start making them til
    nearly a decade later.

  5. I did have a google and it didn't turn much of anything at all, so I
thought I'd seek out the advice of some experts here.

I am told it is the starter motor, but cannot be sure as I write this.
So, which is the barsteward of a job, the starter motor or the starter
    motor clutch? Or both?!?

More information: I am considering buying the bike, and I am a bit strapped
for cash but want to get back on the road, it's a 'reasonable' price because
of this. If it is a terrible job for a beginner to have to do, then I'll
forget it. Otherwise I'm more than willing to get my hands dirty. (Hoping I
can find the part at a breakers.)

    Many thanks,
    best regards

    Pete

Did you use Google web search or Google Groups? If it's the former then
go to http://groups.google.com/ and search for uk.rec.motorcycles. Once
inside the group, I got four pages' worth of hits for "triumph starter
    motor"
The sprag clutch is the part that normally goes as they weren't quite
    up to the task AFAIR.

Some info here - as I remembered, it's an engine out/split the cases
job, hence the 800-odd quid pricetag that was mentioned:

If it's the starter motor clutch then you'll probably find a few at
    breakers because they're broken :).

Unless you can diagnose the problem yourself *properly* before buying
or have enough spare cash to take a punt, I'd steer clear of it.

    Probably just the clutch, BICBW
Not an easy job, and any in the breakers will beef hooked. Ask at a local
dealers how much they'd charge to replace it. Nearly all of that will be
    labour.

    BadaBing-BadaBoom says...
It's bound to be the starter clutch and that's an engine out and strip
job. Likely to cost in the region of £800 if a dealer does it due to the
    labour time involved.

Fortunately on Nordwests and Voxans the sprag clutch is a comparatively
    simple job.
