.... recommended maximum load 2.5 kg. Weight of small Givi topbox and
fittings I was planning to cobble onto the rack - 2.5 kg.

    Bollocks.

That rating is bollocks in itself, man.

I have one on the Bandit that I use to lift the back end when spinning
it round to put it in the garage. It has also supported 20Kg+ on
    several occasions.

I have on on the RF900, too - and that is mounted on rubber doughnuts
so is flexible. I went to Pembrey with all my gear for the weekend
(tent, food, cooker, clothing) in a paddock sack (Warning! Not for use
on motorcycles!) ratchet strapped to it - and when I picked up my
pillion, her bag was cargo-netted to the rear of the paddock sack. The
only thing I was really concerned about was the clearance between the
rack and the rear plastics - which did decrease as load was applied,
    but didn't /quite/ touch.

Wound the speed up progressively and monitored the load, but it didn't
shift so gave it beanage. At double NSL there was a bit of a wobble,
but no more than that. On the way back I was on a mission as it was
getting cold and late, so undercover of darkness we were flat chat for
an hour or so - and she went to sleep leaning on the rack.

What Renntec are concerned about, I'd assume, is the amount of gear
loaded onto one of their racks outside the 'golden triangle' and
causing instability as it hangs off over the rear wheel. They don't
want to be sued if you lob it at the ton on the M1 carrying a bike
engine bungeed to their rack, that's all.

Stack your gear carefully and strap it down well and you'll have no
problem. I don't use bungees to do distance or speed, I use proper
locking or ratchet straps 'cos they don't flex or allow movement in the
    load.

    <Snipped all the right info>

I fitted one to a Thunderace and carried mine and pillion's barrel bags
on it - again, ratchet strapped down tight.

No sign of fatigue after run to Mugello and back.

    Recommended.

the Givi monorack base plate on my bike has a max 5kg sticker - it's been
ignored since 1996 when I bought it to go on the TDM.
