    Hi,

I have just added a Renntec rack to my Diversion 600 but I notice that
Renntec recommends a maximum load of 2.5 Kg!!

The rack looks like it could take way more than that. Does anyone know
why the Max load is so small?

  2. They like to be careful that someone doesn't stick a 50ltr topbox on it and
the fill it with cans of beer, then have it bounce through someone's
    windscreen at 70mph....

  3. Hi Steve.

The reason is that although the rack would take a much larger static load
than 2.5kg, you have to consider the dynamic loads imposed by the vibration
of the rack in normal riding - you may have noticed how top boxes on other
bikes bob up and down as the bike hits a bump, even if they have the proper
    mountings.

I had a modest sized top box clamped to the Renntec rack on my VFR750,
without very much inside it, and after a couple of years the welds fractured
on both sides of the rack. I didn't have a handy mate with a welder, so I
just stuck another, identical rack on, and it lasted another year until I
sold the bike. I'm sure that in time it would have broken also.

    Bye from Rick F650GS/R1150GS

    2.5 Kilos?

Blimey, that's barely enough for my lunch ...

They are just protecting themselves against lawsuits from owners of bikes
with weak rear subframes. There have been cases of BMW1150GS rear subframes
cracking when people have fitted a topbox to the standard rear rack.

I think the early Hayabusas had a problem too.

I've fitted a GIVI Monorack to the pannier rails on my BM so that I can
load my topbox with enough stuff for a week away. The GIVI mounting plate
has a sticker with a ludicrously low max weight too.
