removing valve cover on suzuki bandit

  1. I have recently bought a suzuki bandit 600 and am trying to remove the
    valve cover to get at the engine. I have undone all the relevant bolts
    and can lift the cover but cannot manoeuvre it out to get unrestricted
    access to the engine. I have removed the breather to create more
    space.

    Is there a simple knack to doing this?

    Any help gratefully received.

  2. All the Suzuki SACS engines are a similar design, 600's, 750's, 1100's
    all used the same crankcases and the cylinders were different heights
    to accomodate the various strokes required to achieve a specific
    displacement...

    When racers found out that the 750's handled better than the 1100's,
    they started copying Yoshimura's "Big Papa" engine swap. The cylinder
    was so tall, they had to *saw the valve cover in half* and remove the
    halves whenever they wanted to check the valve clearances...

    But the 600cc version would have the lowest valve cover of any of the
    SACS engines...

    The valve cover has to lift high enough to clear the bracket that holds
    the cam chain idler sprocket, and yet the valve cover has an air/oil
    separator box right in the center and a breather hose comes off of
    that, so the breather hose obviously has to be removed, and the oil
    squirter bolts have to come out, as well as about eight or ten bolts
    that just hold the valve cover down have to be removed...

    The last time I checked the valve adjustment on my GSXR-750 SACS motor,
    I had to loosen up the nuts that held the two throttle cables so I
    could move them out of the way, then I could lift the valve cover high
    enough to clear the idle sprocket, but I didn't have to
    remove the cover from the air/oil separator...

    I had enough room to slide the valve cover out without hitting the
    steering head braces, which is what I suppose your problem is. Can you
    *tilt* one end of the cover *down*, the end on the side in the
    direction you're trying to go with the cover?

    Remove the sheet metal brackets that hold the fairing sides to
    the frame. There's JUST enough clearance, then, to raise the valve
    cover above the timing chain and slide it out one side.
    Watch the underside of the cover, and don't let the timing
    chain scrape off a gasket from around the spark plug wells. They can
    drop all the way down to the crankshaft sprocket and be a real pain in
    the a$$ to get hold of.
