Removing the wheel off a Shaftie ?

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Jason Burton-Woods, Jan 16, 2005.

  1. Having never played with a shaft drive before, when the mate across the
road came over asking for advice on how to remove the rear wheel of his
Honda Deauville (NTV650 I think) I had to say I dont know how to help.

Anyone else know if removing the wheel off something like this should be
straightforward? I'm hoping its a case of loosening the axle and whipping
it out one side, but how does the drive go back together? Easy to line up
    the cogs?

    Thanks in advance

Jason Burton-Woods is of the opinion:
Don't know the Deauville in particular, but my GT750 was straight and
simple. Remove the axle, slide the wheel away from the diff, and then the
wheel just comes straight out. I don't even remember aligning the teeth on
the wheel to put it back together, the wheel just fit straight back on and
the axle went through. Drop the brake caliper back on, and awaaay we go!

That;s how it works on Guzzis. The drive box is attached to the
swingarm, and stays there while you pull the wheel off.

To replace, you offer up the wheel and rotate and wiggle it till the
cogs mesh and the wheel slips hard up against the bevel box.

But first you have to get the jack out from the boot right?

  7. On the K, you don't even have to touch the caliper. Just undo 4 wheel
studs, and off she comes. :)

So is the BMW's ability to balance on front wheel & centrestand when rear
wheel is removed, and vice versa.

I've always wondered how to support the front of my K1200RS if I needed
    to remove the front wheel.

    Now I know.

I have to jack up the rear wheel on my K100 and remove the rear guard to get
    the wheel off.

  15. Put a 2" (ie 5 cm) thick plank under the centre stand (makes it a _bit_
hard to put onto the centre stand though) and the wheel comes away
without having to remove the rear guard.
