Removing Silver Nitrate from Hands

    Hello dears.

When one cuts the nails of Guinea Pigs but cuts too far then one will
generally apply Silver Nitrate to the bleeding area to stop the
bleeding (One can get it in tubes at various vets.)

Yesterday mother was doing this and got silver nitrate on to her hands
and part of her arm. She hasn't complained of any irritation or
anything like that, but now has rather unfortunate dark brown marks
over her fingers and part of her arm. When she got it on herself she
didn't think to wash it off straight away.

For those in the know, is this a burn or is it a stain? She's tried
getting it off with various soaps, washing up liqud and even Swarfeger
and it doesn't even fade so I'm assuming it's a burn. Would that be
    correct?

Apart from removing the limbs, can you think of a way of making it
fade or will she just have to display it for the duration?

  6. In uk.rec.motorcycles, BGN belched forth and ejected the following:
Sounds like a stain to me. What does it look like? You could always
persuade her to get down the tattist and have some work done on it :)

What he said - but you could try gently using one of those eraser sponges,
it does work. Acksherley, lemon juice might work as well.

Just out of curiosity and definately not "in the know" - but isn't silver
nitrate the light-senistive chemical-thingy used in (early) photography?

    - Maybe she has just invented the "photo-tatoo"..?!? :-o
*Sits back and waits for cries of "Angle-grinder"...*

Article in (danish) Wikipedia suggests, that the stains start out brown but
will turn darker (presumably when exposed to light?!) - and that there is
absolutely no way of removing them.

So "photo-tatoo" and "for the duration" it is then...

Celly thinners, or angle grinder. Or leave it, it's only a stain.

I'm not sure if salty water would be good in this situation.

  13. If I knew that, I wouldn't have needed to ask the question. IIRC I've
    met you once, reasonably briefly.

Don't tell your vet that your GP has nails. Claws.

Such bleeding can also be stopped with potassium permanganate, which
interestingly also has a potential to produce stains[1], but not as
    lasting as
As others have pointed out, this is a rather long lasting stain. Not
silver chloride, but elementary silver. Actually same principle as when
photographic film is developed - chemical reduction of Ag+ to Ag.
It has to wear off with the normal shedding of the epidermis. Rubbing
with sand paper or other abrasives might help, but she may prefer the
    stain to soreness.

    [1]water soluble though

I suspect it's the "one" bits as in "When one" and "does one" rather than
the more pikey "When yer" and "D'yer" like what we talk/think like, yer
    know.

Anyway, never mind the mother, think of the pig. You shouldn't let its claw
like extremities get so long they need you to cut them back. Line the bottom
of his box/cage/whatever with 320grit sandpaper (or a permanently running
angle grinder) and let it wear it's nails out naturally. (ish)

You could even make a hamster like guinea pig wheel by converting an angle
    grinder.

I suppose I think as "when you" but if I'd posted that to UKRM one
would get replies such as "I don't cut guinea pig nails!" I try to
avoid using "you" in conversations where it could be mistaken for an
accusation too so I speak and write it as 'one' after it gets through
    my mental filters.
