methinks a read of the basics of engines and gearboxes at
howstuffworks.com would be of assistance to you...

Well OK , I hope people did get some amusement out of my post and made
    them feel a bit better.
    :p

After doing a test run along a stretch of road that I know the revs at a
certain speed , I got the same revs of 80Kmh @ 5200rpm and going back
    the other way against a 25 - 30 knot head wind I got 80Kmh @ 5400rpm.

So the suggestion that I was in the wrong gear when I first made the
    post proves to be true.

I know that the final drive gearing can't change , it just one of those
things I didn't think about at the time .

Since I made the initial post , I have inadvertently found myself using
4th gear instead of top a couple of times.
This goes to show that after the rejetting the carby with bigger jets ,
the performance has improved to the extent that the 4th gear feels like
the top gear in smoothness and engine noise.

Generally the bigger jets on the CB250 has a reasonable marked
improvement with smoother acceleration , particularly under load or
going up hills , quicker to get up to speed and better cold starts.

But the noticeable improvement is at speeds at 60Kmh and over ,
everything just runs smoother and it's quicker on acceleration.
So I would say that if anybody has a CB250 and uses it to commute along
freeways or open roads , then get the bigger jets .

Now I will have to wait a few days to see how much fuel these bigger
jets will use , if they use too much , then I will have to go back to
    the stock standard jets.

BTW , for the pedantic , I will be getting a service done on the bike in
another 800Ks , so I will get the mechanic to check that the bigger jets
    haven't done any damage .

But but but.... if you had received such significant performance improvements
from rejetting, rather than 4th gear feeling like 5th gear, 5th gear would
feel like 4th gear, and rather than settling for 4th, you'd be searching for
    6th.

Now , now , don't over analyse the thing , suffice to say that the
second top gear felt like the top gear and that I could have used an
    overdrive after the top gear.

The first bottom gear , the second bottom gear and the third bottom gear
was all accounted for and ran OK.

    ( 4 < 5 .... 5 > 4 .... 5 = maximum )

No one here would EVER take the piss about anything, we all have far much
respect for our fellow man! *cough* *cough*

Good to hear that you have finally given in to the laws of physics though -
that's a pretty tough battle to win, you know.

Hush, Nev. So long as he's happy, it's okay. Reality is what you
    can get away with.
