Anyone out there know where these are allowed to be fixed onto NSW
    bikes?

Mine was attached to my rego plate at the back, but it fell off. I'm
hoping to be able to stick it somewhere more secure.

regulation they have to be on the left hand side (rear), commonly attached
to the chain guard on the rear anker point- also can be fitted to the bottom
left of the number plate using a single bolt but they happen to work their
way up slightly covering the number plate...

I object to this blatant discrimination against shafties.

My claim to 'legality' fame was that I was responsible for the location
being changed in WA to, "almost anywhere on the left hand side of the bike",
from, "on the left handlebar, no more than 5 cms from the steering head".
Mine is attached to the back of the numberplate and in a metal holder, not
the plastic things that turn to dust before the next rego is due.

    here we go:
ROAD TRANSPORT (VEHICLE REGISTRATION) REGULATION 1998 - SECT 17

    (3) A registration label must be affixed:
    (a) in the case of a motor vehicle fitted with a windscreen or fixed
    windows:
    (i) to the lower left (or near side) portion of the front windscreen, or
(ii) to any fixed window on the left (or near) side of the vehicle, and

    (b) in the case of a caravan or other trailer:
    (i) on or adjacent to the vehicle's number-plate in such a manner
that the characters on the number-plate are not obscured, or
(ii) if the vehicle has a fixed rear window or a hinged rear window that
is to be closed when the caravan or other trailer is being towed - to
that window, in a location as close as possible to the vehicle's
    number-plate, and
    (c) in any other case - on or adjacent to the vehicle's rear
number-plate in such a manner that the characters on the number-plate
    are not obscured.

so looks like bikes are option C.

(found by going to the RTA site, then "rules and regulations" then
"traffic legislation" and picking the obvious link from the 6 given.)

better brush up MB :) see the legislation I quote... can't put it on the
    chainguard no more.

In South Oz it used to have to be on the handlebar clamp bolt! Was a
nice little smackdown for a cop to use against a biker who annoyed them.
The ex Hell's Angel who did the pain on the 'Orrible 'Onda chop warned
me about that, as patch clubs were guaranteed to get done for it.

There were plenty of barely legal things on that bike, but patch clubs
are very good at barely legal.

  6. If you have a fairing, stick it on the inside, just like a windscreen , use
a bit of "light skinz" to keep it weather proof.

    Mick Chester

If you don't have a fairing, point this out to recalcitrant copper.

Why on the left side of the bike? Why not either side? Or on the plate?
Or anywhere where it's clearly visible?

Same reason you have to stick it on the passenger side of your car.. so it can
be read without the person inspecting it needing to stand in the middle of the
road. Rather logical I'd have thought.

Would be for a car, perhaps, if parallel parked. Bikes usually park
facing outwards at an angle. Therefore, left or right doesn't matter.

Ditto for cars which are angle parked.

** I'll keep wearing black until something darker comes along **
I've got mine blu-tacked to the centre of the rear hub...
    Whirls around quite fine.
The copper looked at it, scratched his head and walked off...
    Must have been okay there!!!

Of course it does. more often than not a bike will stop with it's left hand
side nearest the kerb, even if angle parked, not just because that's the way
you arrive and leave, but also because the road camber and location of the
sidestand mean that the bike is most stable parked that way. Why would you
park with the bike facing oncoming traffic?

it's so the parking plods don't have too work to hard, or think too hard to
    find the label

Smee will get upset if other people started flaming his special friends and he
doesn't have an opportunity to wear his brown blouse.
