The 9 should be finished sometime this weekend or early next week,
then comes time to get it registered again.

This gives me some pause regarding the re-registration procedure.
I would have gotten the answers from Vicroads but the bastards
hung up on me after 15 minutes on hold.

It's been unregistered for about 3.5 years. As I understand, they'll
want to visually inspect the bike before registering it. Does this count
as a roadworthy or will I still need a separate roadworthy?

Once upon a time you could ride an unregistered bike provided you
were travelling directly to/from a roadworthy tester or Vicroads.
Is this still the case? Or will I have to get a temp registration? Do I
have to go to Vicroads in person to get one? This'll mean a susbstantial
trip just to get a temp reg.

In my case (bought an unreg'd bike) it was separate, the guy at vicroads
only checked the lights and the things I'd already told him beforehand,
engine and frame no's, model, colour, cylinders.

I don't know about the roadworthy but I was told I could ride it to my
registration "appointment", which you have to book and pay for beforehand,
    about $30

If it's unregistered, you need a RWC.
You also need a temporary permit to drive it backwards and forwards between
the RWC place, your place and VicRoads.

Thats correct fuller but if you still have the reg plate on your bike/car
and you drive/ride safely, the chances of anything happening are very, very
remote. I have never got a temp reg cos (for me) its just not worth it, and
risking it is much more fun cos at the end of the day you save time and
money unless youre really, really, really unlucky.

It's a gamble, just like playing the pokies, except, the odds of winning are
    on your side :)

I just enquired about this for my posty. You need a temp reg. If you
have a fax machine and credit card, you can do it on the phone. It is
about $33 basic, then about $1.00 per day, so a 7 day permit costs
around $40. I think I remember them saying 28 days is max.

As others have said, you need both the roadworthy and the inspection.

    Mark.

Thanks, pretty much what I needed to know.

It has a reg plate and it was mine all along. I just let the reg lapse.

Firstly you'll need a temp permit.
Then get a RWC, then make an appointment at VicRoads and present the bike,
they'll check the Vin/ Engine numbers and are not really interested in
anything else since you've already got a RWC.

If you bought the bike as a write-off or it was written off while you were
the owner (and you bought the vehicle off the insuance after it was labelled
as a write-off) you better ring Vicroads and get the addy of an approved
    VIV-report place.
Call up the VIV-guys, make appointment, scramble ALL receipts for parts you
bought for the repairs, show up there and prove that all parts used in the
repairs were genuinely bought, pay about $300 for a piece of paper that says
that all parts were legit, then RWC, then VicRoads (as above).

If the bike was declared a "Statutory write-off" in the past and hasn't got
a Vin-Plate anymore, forget it, you'll never get it registered (anywhere in
    AUS).

    cheers

    lapse.

In WA, you would have broken the law by not returning the plate when
    the rego lapsed.
