According to a couple old posts the rego in QLD is much cheaper if you
modify your bike to single seat (ie. no pillion). However on the QLD
transport webshite they only list a single registration fee for
motorcycles; they don't even differentiate based on engine size
    (http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/qt/LTASinfo.nsf/index/registration_fees#registration3).

So, have the fees changed since those old posts or is our government
simply too lazy to provide the full information on their website? Also
would a single-seat reduce insurance premiums as well?

Bit of background: I've just convinced myself that I want a motorbike
but after getting the insurance quote I want to fully understand the
economics. QBE gave me a quote of $873pa for comprehensive insurance
(I'm 21 with no prior insurance history) so I'll probably just end up
getting third part property. And I'm hoping that this single seat deal
might reduce things a bit more.

BTW thanks to everyone who posts on this group. I've been trawling
here for a while and its been a great source of info.

The rego fee is the same, it's the compulsory 3rd party insurance
    that's cheaper.

You'll need to do enough to the bike to convince them that you can't
easily reconvert it to carry two people. It has to be inspected and
they attach a modification plate I believe.

  3. You need to have your seat cut to 500mm or put on a 'racing' single seat,
remove pillion pegs and blank the holes off so you can't put them back on
easily (some inspectors don't insist on this) and get it inspected and a
compliance plate put on then go to the rego joint.

Where you save is on the compulsory third party. These sites tells all -

  4. Modifications normally required are to cut the usable portion of the
seat back to a maximum of some particular length (can't remember - but
think it's around 45 cm)and to remove the rear footpegs (some insist
that the peg mounting holes be welded up, so that the pegs can't be
    reattached).
