<delurk> Last year I bought a non running Morini 3½ sport with the intention of getting it going for use as a weekend bimble machine. The bike originated in Italy and has never been registered in the UK. Now its up and running the first stage will be to get it an MOT (think it'll pass, bit worried about the slightly notchy headraces and noisy valentini pipe). My current insurers have told me they will provide cover on the frame number for riding to / from an MOT test. That may be an interesting ride as the furthest I have ridden it so far is to the end of the street and back. Assuming it passes an MOT what comes next? Anyone here been through the process of getting a UK registration plate for an imported bike? Am I letting myself in for a world of hassle? I have the receipt of purchase and a dating certificate from the VMCC. The bike is 1983 if that makes any difference? Ta. -- SimonM GSX-R 1000 K5 (For Sale) Morini 3½ Sport K1 Spamtrap - change "deadspam.com" to "veryblack.co.uk"
Ah, I did read the FAQ(s) eons ago (honest) but don't recollect anything about registering an import. Check. What if it fails though? Does the rule saying the bike must be registered in the UK within 14 days still stand? About 10 miles. I hope it makes it. Bike seems to run fine, but I am sure a proper run will reveal all sorts of worrying foibles. Don't have any import docs. Bought it off a chap in the UK as a non runner. All I have is a receipt of purchase and a dating certificate. Will this be a problem? My worry is the MOT. Nearest is a franchised dealer not an old style back street bike shop. Not sure how they will react to the continental headlight amongst other stuff. I hope so. Cheers. -- SimonM GSX-R 1000 K5 (For Sale) Morini 3½ Sport K1 Spamtrap - change "deadspam.com" to "veryblack.co.uk"
No. All DVLA need is accepted proof of the age - that'd normally by the foreign registration certificate, but a dating certificate from a DVLA- registered club (DVLA keep a list of clubs authorised, used for both imports and <73 historic vehicle tax class) is just as good. When I registered the VeloSlowlex, a foreign reg doc wasn't an option, because the Froggies don't need to register them at all.
Excellent. One less thing to worry about. -- SimonM GSX-R 1000 K5 (For Sale) Morini 3½ Sport K1 Spamtrap - change "deadspam.com" to "veryblack.co.uk"
Any beam showing above the horizontal datum and to the right of the vertical when on 'dipped' will be a fail. On one of my Gilera GFRs this is simply rectified by a piece of black tape. I thought Morinis just had 'vertical' dip CEV units, all mine have had. Or has it got a non-original headlight unit? PF
Err..., dunno if its vertical dip. How do I tell? Mine is an early 80's model and not one of the better looking round headlight 70's bikes. The headlight unit is CEV but it's an ugly oblong thing. Like this http://www.gixxer.myzen.co.uk/Morini/headlamp1.JPG http://www.gixxer.myzen.co.uk/Morini/headlamp2.JPG I also have the half fairing but it is in need of some tlc and, frankly, it is hideous anyway. I would much prefer a round headlight as I think the bike would look a lot better. Wouldn't know where to source one though. -- SimonM GSX-R 1000 K5 (For Sale) Morini 3½ Sport K1 Spamtrap - change "deadspam.com" to "veryblack.co.uk"
The wedge-shaped, angled section to the right of the centre is the bit that illuminates the hedgerows on the wrong side of the road, and that's where you put your black tape. You can avoid the "black-tape" look by using invisible sellotape instead.
On Nordwests and GFRs (rectangular headlights) you can achieve the desired effect by flattening one of the locating tangs on the H4 bulb and rotating it. Haven't got round to it on GFR#2 yet - hence the tape. -- +----------------------------------------------------------------+ | Pete Fisher at Home: | | Voxan Roadster Gilera Nordwest * 2 Yamaha WR250Z | | Gilera GFR * 2 Moto Morini 2C/375 Morini 350 "Forgotten Error" | +----------------------------------------------------------------+
(The Older Gentleman) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying: It'd be payable if the bike was coming from outside the EU. Without an EU registration doc (NEVER GIVE THEM ORIGINALS, only ever photocopies), you might have to persuade a bit, but it shouldn't be necessary.
This stuff: http://www.sellotape.com/offinvi.htm It's translucent, but not transparent, so light striking it scatters in all directions, instead of being a directed beam.
Oooh, ta. Yes, that will certainly be better than black tape. -- SimonM GSX-R 1000 K5 (For Sale) Morini 3½ Sport K1 Spamtrap - change "deadspam.com" to "veryblack.co.uk"
Guy who sold it to me said there would be no VAT payable when registering. Guess I'll find out if and when the heap passes its MOT. -- SimonM GSX-R 1000 K5 (For Sale) Morini 3½ Sport K1 Spamtrap - change "deadspam.com" to "veryblack.co.uk"
