Redundancy?

    No, not me.

I've been driving on the M25 this afternoon, in the roadworks between
Staines and the M4, and I have a question: if they have speed cameras on the
variable-limit gantries, why do they need to set up extra gatsoes along the
    side of the road?

'Cos the ones in the gantries don't work?

Perhaps they're playing 3 strikes and you're out policing, in order to
    ease congestion.

Are they set at the variable limit or are they set at the NSL+ whatever
    percentage?

I have never heard of anyone getting nicked for speeding through the
variable limit where the Specs cameras are.

    I haven't lost my mind, it's
backed up to a floppy disc
    that's around here somewhere.

Fault tolerance. One stops working and it fails over to the other one.

It's very difficult to get anywhere near the limit, even when
filtering due to all of the slow moving traffic.

Just to warn you all, I was travelling rather too fast one night ( about
2.00am) and I had a double flash from one of the gantry cameras. Now I'm not
going to say what the excessive speed was, but I would have had an instant
ban for it. The warning is, that the gantry cameras can get you even if
there is no restriction or warning.

I was luck and never heard anything about it.

John emerged from their own little world to say
There is always a speed restriction in place aka National Speed Limit.

  13. Because the speed for the roadworks is 40 (IIRC) and the gantry ones are
    set at various times.

Also not all gantries have active cameras, so they may not be in the
right place for the road works. The road works are also a moving target.

As to the gantry ones being inacative when NSL is in force, this is not
true. Our friendly plod posted some time back they are set to around 100
when not trying to get people to slow down during rush hour(s). I have
tested this up to 95 on occasions (so at least 90 with speedo variations)

IIRC (and I believe I do), he said they used to be set at 104mph, but were
lowered to 96mph a while back.

Further to the above, I've just been flashed on the M25 with no signs lit.
Doing about 85mph. Which is -way- less than that quoted above, and I've done
95 or so through them many a time, even 120mph on the way to the cliquerun
a month or so ago (doh!), so **** knows what's going on.

I shall watch the letterbox with interest (and a modicum of trepidation) over
the next fortnight and report back...
