OK, so concensus seems to be

    Sparky
    Plumber
    Nursing Agency
    Independant Health and Safety
    Nursing Home.

The appeal of all is the "being your own boss" aspect with the first two
allowing a good degree of flexibility in working hours allowing the person
to work round term times etc so handy for family life IYSWIM. Looking at
courses, its not like i can just do 6 months and then gain experience, its
an NVQ course, could take up to a couple of years plus need to do work
experience as part of the course.

The nursing agency one needs a lot of looking into, theres a lot of stuff
off the top of my head that'd need looking into, including interviews, CRB
checks, the contracts aspects, regulations, maintaining registration
details, selling the agency to potential hospitals, primary care trusts etc
etc. thats before figuring out the financial aspects such as rates setting,
    wages, insurance etc etc.

H&S is doable but im not sure what sort of aspects it would involve, could
be teaching organisations, in which case i dunno what sort of money could
potentially earned, or independant inspections, where the same queries lie.

Running a nursing home's still in the dream section i think realistically,
as someone said its a hell of a capital cost, preliminary research is that
you'd be looking at about £20,000 per bed you would want!!! :-(

So basically nothing that £15,000 ish will accomplish easily

No, serious. I saw a program on Discovery where they were erecting a
building Germany. The roof was a fabric material and you could not walk
on it. They had these chaps wiv ropes hanging all over the place
putting the roof on. They talked about the schooling for them and it was
    quite interesting.

Is that one of those association memory techniques to remind you to
rectify issues raised by the regulatory body?

Rope access bods are in demand these days, problem is, like diving, you
need some sort of skill when you get to where you're going.

    e.g. My trade: http://www.ndtcabin.com/vacancies/ndtc1664.php

Dopes on ropes, we call them. Can earn good money thobut.

Start working on the business plan for the nursing home *now*.

There are plenty of people on ukrm who can help you, don't worry about
the capital cost at this time, just start planning. As part of the
planning you can work out what kind of business you require and how to
    finance it.

That 15K is compensation for throwing you out of a job, spend it on
something which makes you happy, i.e. mortgage, motorbike, shoes for the
    kids etc.

Whilst you can spend it as you wish, in my opinion your redundancy
package should include a seperate element for retraining which may start
now that you're in the consultation period. Certainly when there have
been redundancies in companies around here the local enterprise agency
has put up funds for retraining and the companies themselves have added
    additional retraining funds.

Write a letter to your employee representative and your local councillor
asking what support there is going to be for re-training to find an
    alternative job.

CRB for all employees, ECRB for the 'responsible person' - which
potentially leaves you having to sack yourself without knowing why.

I'll claim that as a partial whoosh, even though I forgot to add the
    bit about dyslexia.

    CRB - CBR - Honda - rectify - regulatory. Tenuous, I know.
