The characters don't seem as "together" as they did in the original shows
either and Craig Charles teeth are fucking crap.

Kryten and the Cat seem to be the two who doing the best of a bad job.

I did like the way Rimmer dealt with the other hologram though. Very un
    Rimmer-like, but age does things.

Watching BBC TV live, earlier today, I caught a trailer for a new TV
series: Martin Clunes playing Reggie Perrin.

I bet that will be awful too.

    Oh dear.

If they want to "extend a franchise", OTOH, they could so a lot worse
    than to watch "Lewis".

I don't watch much TV drama. I *adored* "Morse", well-written, superbly
    shot, wonderfully acted. Just *wonderful*.

When "Lewis" was first touted, I feared for the worst. Would they
trample all over John Thaw's memory?

It has been (what I've seen of it) utterly wonderful. This evening's
offering was (the last in the series) lovely. The emergence of
"LEW-issss" from his mentor's shadow has been beautifully handled. The
Hathaway character has been the perfect foil.

The scene this evening with Lewis listening to *his* music, glass in
hand, tear in eye, had me swallowing hard. **** knows what it would do
    to Sheila Hancock...

I commend it to the house.

I like that, too. Not seen tonight's episode as I was hoping to be watching
    MotoGP. Will download it later.

The guy beaten and drowned last week, Steven Mullan, was played by my

    I saw that episode.

I see he does a lot of musical theatre.

You should bring him to the Alps.

Check[1]. Episode three plumbed new depths. It was unintentional car-
    crash television.
Check[1]. I can see why the beeb declined it.
Check[1]. It was an artless abortion.

<g> He's been on the back of my bike. I may yet tempt him to the dark
    side.

Actually, he's a very talented lad. We really enjoyed his musical
Departure Longe at the Fringe last year, and we've just heard it's to
be produced in New York later this year as part of a showcase for the
    Merkin show-biz big-wigs to attend.

  14. Caught that.
Remakes usually are. This one could be utterly awful, not because of MC
as such, but because we expect too much of it. Those who have never seen
RP originals might like it, who knows.

    <Martin Clunes>
Sometimes very funny, especially in Men Behaving Badly, but he's not
really a comic actor providing belly laughs.
I found early Doc Martin quite good, but the later ones quite shit as
his character changed at the whim of the director.

    Bad form, but...

Having watched it, all I can say is that it was a mistake letting you
know about it again, as it was just crap.

I was never much of a fan, but this was just fucking dire.

    Mea culpa, etc.

I just watched the episode you refer to.

I quite enjoy the humour in the script. The sneering between the leads and
the hamming of the guest actors is lovely. Simon Callow was a joy and I'm
sure you must've gone a bit wobbly over the notion of a promiscuous Joanna
    Lumley, sporting a comedy accent.

The only criticism is the Americanisation of the script. There are too many
Colomboesque summarisations for the hard of thinking.

And that last episode was probably the worst of the series, what with
Joanna Lumley's random accent and a plot more in line with Midsomer
    Murders.

One of the earlier ones, where Hathaway gets caught up in a side plot
about a chap running a luggage scam was brilliant - if you haven't
seen it though I won't tell you why.

I love that they have kept the Morse-style incidental music, and the
way that he still gets acknowledged in passing as they meet up with
    minor characters.
