It appears "Dave" are broadcasting a new series of Red Dwarf, starting
at 21:00 on Friday. It claims to be a "Dave original".

Yep, brand new series, with all the old crew back in action.

Dunno if I'm bothered though. Will it tarnish the memory?

And so it is. A three-parter with eac epi shown at 21:00 Friday, Sat and
    Saun.

Oddly, in the TV mag this week.... a full 8 series DVD set is being
    advertised.

The box set? Yes it's great. All the originals, not the nasty
re-mastered ones. And as a bonus you get the new series' as well (as in
VII and VIII, the less good ones)

I've not watched it yet, it's on Sky+ (went to see 'Knowing' instead). I
confess, my expectations are not high.

It was OK, I'll watch the rest and a full series if they make one.
Thing is, I'm not in my teens any more (by a long way). So I'm not
really going to be into a program I watched in my teens.

  12. Last night's episode so-so, but may get better.

What are the details of the box set you mention, clearly there are
    different versions to avoid.

And I regularly watch the episodes on Dave at 1 or 2 in the morning. I'm
hoping it perks up a bit tonight and Sunday.

No idea about different versions of the boxed stuff, but the BBC
'remastered' all the early stuff, adding a load of CGI fx which really
    looked (IMHO) shit.

The episodes on this set are un-molested, and as originally transmitted.
    Which is (again IMHO) nice.

The camera work was doing my head in, far too many re-establishing
shots detracting from the storyline for the sake of big backgrounds,
and then some truly horrible camera angles like shooting over the
shoulder a character sat at a table, IIRC. It all just looked wrong
    and uncomfortable.

10 minutes in and episode 2 is already getting painful

Still not watched Ep 1 yet, but Sky+ seems to agree. It just
    spontaneously rebooted.

A slight improvement over epi 1, but only slight.
