Recommendations for VHS / DVD player recorder

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Paul Corfield, Aug 27, 2006.

  1. Prompted by Verdegris' post about a VHS player does the FOAK have a
recommendation about a good combined VHS / DVD player and recorder with
a hard disc recorder as well? I have been pondered a JVC DR MX10 but if
there is something better then it would be good to know.

And one dimbo question too - is it now industry standard that if you set
up a programme reminder in Sky's programme guide and set the "auto
record" function that all recorders will respond to the message from the
    sky box?

    Yours technologically challenged !

Personally, I'd upgrade to Sky+ and get a separate DVD recorder and VCR.

  3. I'm afraid I object to the additional subscription that Sky demand.

  4. I think it was in Private Eye where read someone likened Sky's policy [1]
as similar to buying a new Mondeo, then buying the petrol to make it go, but
having to pay Ford an additional monthly charge to allow your petrol to be
pumped into your engine in your car....

That said I have Sky+ still over here....

    Dave

[1] Of only letting you watch the recorded programmes (recorded from Sky to
whom a subscription is already paid for the programme) if you pay another
    sub.

I think you'll probably find they are all pretty shite. At least all
the reviews I have read point that way.
    With some fettling, perhaps.

Hmmm. I don't see it like that.

Using the car comparison..... it's like paying 300 quid / month for a
basic one with no toys and wind-down windows or chosing to pay £350 /
month for something with all the toys, even though you wouldn't use 'em
    most of the time.....
I wouldn't be without Sky+ now. I never used to record anything until I
    got it.

  7. I thought the point was valid - Sky make us buy the Sky+ box (so if it goes
wrong we have to pay to have 'our' equipment fixed) and we pay for the
channels we want. If i record a programme from a channel I paid for onto a
Sky+ box which is 'mine' why do they have the right to stop me watching the
recording if I don't pay them the £10 a month they demand (or rather would
demand if i didn't have every channel going anyway...)
That analogy works better for the channel package payments than the Sky+ box
imo - I hardly ever watch movies, but pay £1 a month for them on top of my
"all the channels plus sports" package that i actually wanted. And by
paying that extra quid, i think that's how they 'let me off' the Sky+
    charge. Or something.
It has proved useful, I admit, but then so is uknova for all those things I
    forget to record...

If it goes through the scart socket, it should be okay.

Saying that, the way I set it up, is to set the "auto play" function on
the sky box and set the recorder at the same time.

So when the program starts, the sky box switches on and the recorder
records. When the program finishes, the sky box switches off and I set
    the recorder to stop too.

This is where Telewest got it right. Their version of Sky+ (TVDrive)
is an extra 10 or 15 quid a month over your package and that includes
the rental of the box. Anything happens to the box, they replace it.

  10. I'm not sure Telewest would pay to put the cabling in all the way out here
    though.... :(

If your Sky+ box breaks, just tell 'em that you'll cancel your contract
    if they don't fix it.

    Worked for me.

They know that, for the sake of a cheap box replacement, they stand to
    lose 40 to 50 quid a month.

  12. That's a function of pin 8 on the Scart. Disable pin 8 on Scart cables
to affected units as necessary. All you have to do is open up the Scart
shell, pull out pin 8 and tape it back up on the main lead.

Trying to cram too much in to reach a price point I spose. Technically
there is no reason I can see why they *should* be shite, they just seem
    to be.

  16. It isn't VHS, but I can thoroughly recommend the Panasonic HDD/Freeview/DVD
    recorder. Superb thing.

Yeah, but you had to fork out a couple of hundred quid up front. I
    didn't.
