Recommend dyno in Austin area

Discussion in 'Texas Bikers' started by darin Ginther, Sep 20, 2004.

  1. I finally dusted the cobwebs off an old turbo GPZ after having various
parts of the motor sit under my desk for a few years. Suprisingly,
she's running and driving. All I've got to do now is finish plumbing
the new intercooler and see what happens.

I'm looking for a dyno in the Austin area that can do A/F. Advice and
previous experience is always appreciated. I'll probably be making
about 4 runs, so price is a consideration.

I can't speak for the Austin area, but up here if you watch for track
days or local events they may offer a "special" on Dyno runs. I've
seen 'em for $20.00 a run, but not too often.

  3. I'm speaking of a factory equipped turbo motorcycle. 1984 ZX750-E1.
Back in 1984 it was a brutally fast, bullish-handling bike. Probably
a contender for the fastest bike at the time.

It's EFI. Unless you work on it yourself, I you'll have serious
trouble finding anyone who can help you out if you have any sort of
mechnical trouble. Fairly collectable in original form.

How's it ride? Stock, it's a reasonable bike. 12psi of boost on a
7.8:1 CR. It puts out about 115 HP, so it's fairly fast. Typical of
the 1980s bikes, it's a bit heavy and has single piston calipers.

The bike I have doesn't resemble a GPZ. It's been stripped down, most
of the fairing removed. It has large bore throttle bodes, a modified
turbo, a dumped exaust pipe, 810cc, larger valves, blah blah blah.
The turbo is good for 24psi on race gas. I've added an intercooler
and I'd estimate that it puts down about 160+hp to the rear wheel, but
would like to confirm on a dyno.

How does it ride? On 93 octane, it's like a normal bike at about
15-17 psi of boost, but with a serious boost hit above 7k rpm. It is
a bit laggy before that. Compared to modern sport bikes the brakes
stink, handling is OK thanks to some suspsension changes. It's loud
and has that background whine of a turbo charger, which is a bit
    unique.

On race gas, I've had it to the drag strip a few years ago. I simply
turned awful 1/4 mile times in the high 11s low 12s. The MPH was in
the high 120s and low 130s. Basically it would bring the wheel up in
the first 3 gears. 1st and 2nd would scare the crap out of you as the
wheel would shoot straight up. It needed wheelie bars badly. It's
been resurected after sitting for about 3 years and I'm not sure what
I'm going to do with it now.

How much do either of these cost?
