Real buying dilemma

  1. All old airhead RS and RT fairings had those.

Something to do with headlight beam setting, I think. Unimportant,
    anyway.

Well, I have. (Panniers aren't shown, but are included and he's looking
around his dusty old stock to see if he has a K-box rack for me, too)

Deposit paid by credit card. Service and MOT being done this week,
    delivery planned for Sunday 28th.

What he said. Also, take Katie along if at all possible. Sarah has found
all my airheads comfortable without any form of backrest - roomy, flat
    saddle, modest acceleration.

See the lugs on the grabrail, the topbox has a external mounting plate. It
locates there and at another at the bottom of the seat fairing.

Call motorworks and ask them how to fiddle it.

Took me a good while to get used to the wind pressure on my
back, this is after a bare R80/7.
Pity the turbulence could not be controlled sufficient to
provide a variable stregth back rest.

On another point, perhaps Gyp might tell me if my abiding
interest in an R80ST is well placed.
I loved the nippyness of the R80/7 and wondered whether it
was there in the ST too.

I would like an un faired bike for summer, one that is as
    much fun as the 80/7.
The RT is frequently too hot to ride in summer.

I really enjoyed my ST and the only reason I parted with it was because
the saddle was far too hard and a real PITA on longer journeys. I
replaced it with a K100RS and almost immediately realised the error of
my ways and got another R80.

I'd suggest that the R80ST is an order of magnitude nippier than the /7.
If you can find one, you'll love it.

  9. The ST is amazingly agile, but it ain't that comfy and the fuel
consumption is bad. It's undergeared. Parts are hard to come by
(engine's OK, but so much else was unique to that model).

Front brake can't be easily upgraded (no mounts for second caliper). I
wouldn't touch one. It wasn' BMW's most successful boxer and they had to
do all sorts of special offers to shift them.

Sounds like my interest could be misplaced then.

So now I need to re-adjust my sights.
I've always liked the Transalp, but I have no idea if it
fits in the same "nippyness" range.

    Is there much unobtanium?

From what I recall, most of it was a re-painted G/S, with the other
bits being R65. Or is it that early G/S bits are getting rare too?

I recall them being hard to shift at the time, but I think that was more
because it was too different for the BMW crowd that it being wrong as such

  14. The clocks were R45/65, yes, and used ones are hard to find as they were
only ever fitted to those models.

The frame was basically GS, yes, and it shared the upright riding
stance. And as you say, early GS parts are hard to find.
That's about it, yes. If someone wanted a real sit-up-and-beg BMW, they
bought a GS. If they wanted a good BMW tourer, they bought and RS or an
RT. if they wanted a naked BMW, they bought a /7. And nobody bought the
    ST.

    Excellent - thanks.

If I can do similar, I'll be quite happy - although see my other post
about an R80RT on eBay with a Wingrack fitted. That would be the best
solution - I have to assume he used the Givi 'universal' fitting kit for
    it.

I'm not bothered about them being a bit on the high side when it comes
to price because they're going up in value and a good one will carry
    on increasing in value.

Oddly enough the RT model doesn't seem to be doing as well but it
might well follow in a year or two.

Looking at the specs, there doesn't seem to be that much differentiating the
ST from a basic mono R80. The R80 has a little less suspension travel at
the rear, and an 18" front wheel instead of a 19" one. The ST has the
taller GS-style saddle. It also seems to have the same low-ratio bevel box
as the R80RT, which could account for perceived "nippiness".

If I was looking for ST-style kicks, I'd get a sorted R80, lighten it a bit,
and put GS bars on it.

Sounds like a fair option, and I know a bit about these
    bikes already.
