Andy owned one alright, there's no doubt about that. If he says lacquer
peeled off, then it was there and it peeled off. He's not in the habit
of telling lies or embellishing stories for effect.

Have you ever thought that maybe UK models have lacquered engines
because there's a slight chance the bike might get used when there's
damp in the air, unlike US models.

No, it didn't. The tariff only applied to imported bikes over 700cc,
not bikes made in the U.S. The Japanese manufacturers were already
building many of their major U.S. market big bore bikes in the U.S.
When the tariff was instituted, they began building more in the U.S.
Plus, they had to stop selling their large cruisers for less than it
cost to build them (and making up the difference in the prices of bikes
for which there was no comptetition, which was the point of the tariff)
and they simply sleeved down their 750cc bikes (which, at that time,
were their largest-selling sportbikes) to 699cc, thus escaping the
tariff in more cases than not. All you have to do is compare
1984-1987 Japanese U.S. model MSRP prices across the model range to see
that the tariff did EXACTLY what the international trade authorities
agreed it ought to do - rationalized the asking prices of Japanese
motorcycles in the U.S. across their model ranges, just as they were
rationalized in other markets where the Japanese were not trying to use
predatory business practices to target a sole surviving domestic
producer. It wasn't all that much different than when the British
government attempted to prop up NVT, but then, that bunch of socialists
couldn't kep their fingers out of the management pie, could they?

Temporarily. The tariff was a short-term imposition, a declining fee
schedule that was originally implemented for five years, but cancelled
after four years.... at the request of Harley-Davidson itself.
No, they survived because they bought themselves back from AMF, which
had been running the company as a cash cow, and which was not investing
anything in new plant, new equipment, new product, or quality control -
you know, kind of like the way the Workers cooperative at Meridan and
the government bail-out types in England ran NVT into the ground,
destroying almost a century of motorcycle history. Luckily, Willie G.
Davidson and Vaughn Beals prevented that from happening to
    Harley-Davidson.

Not only are you rude, bigoted, and prideful, you also don't know shit
    about motorcycle history.

Gosh, look! A 'merkin having a go at 'socialists' from non-Merkinland!

Do you think it might be possible to be bigoted agianst people who you think
    are 'socialists'? Just asking....
I'll have to look this up...

    .... "1. Arrogant. Disdainful"

You mean Bushful! Now I understand! Why didn't you say????
Well at least it's only motorcycle history, eh? A large proportion of
'merkins don't seem to 'know shit' about any history. And what they do
'know' tends to be wrong and/or biased towards good old Uncle Sam....
    Shockingly enough.

  5. That's about it, yes.

I think it's discontinued parts only, mind, but 400 Four seats and
exhausts probably fall into that category.

What's nice is that Honda never listed a complete system for the 400
Four. You had to order every single component (two separate headers, two
headers siamesed into the collector box, and the silencer) separately.
Dave Silver says "Sod this" and lists it as a single unit - although you
can buy the parts separately if you want.

As for the grabrail - dunno now. He definitely told me it was a 750
item, but maybe Honda is now re-making the original.

  6. Well, as long as you haven't got anything substantive to contribute,
    thanks anyway.

Which is exactly what I said. I specifically used the term "imported
bikes", which means not including domestically produced ones, whether
the manufacturer is Japanese or Merkin owned. I am convinced that either
you cannot read or that you are just terminally stupid....or both.
I don't need to know that much about a manufacturer whose products have
no bearing on my life, and never will as long as they produce the shit
that they do. I know enough to have made my mind up about them, nothing
will change it now. One of my close friends has recently retired after
running 5 major Harley dealerships here in the UK. He gave up trying to
convince me to buy one years ago.

FYI, I've ridden quite a few HDs, all of them were a major
disappointment. Especially the Buell that broke its exhaust on the
dealer's forecourt, just as I was getting on to it. I was looking
forward to trying that out as it was a break from the usual Harley
    styling.

But it didn't prevent you from launching off on an attack based on
    fallacy and supposition.
Well, there you go. A closed mind, based on lack of knowledge.
Thanks for at least admitting it.

Yeah, so? I also stated the facts which I noticed you so conveniently
failed to reply to and just blew off. As I said I didn't do jack to
you yet you sure jumped my case for no f'n reason at all. Seeing as
how you snipped out my question pertaining to the inferiority complex
I guess I must have hit the nail on the head with that one. Thanks for
    proving me right.

Ah crap, now I need a new keyboard thanks to you. I'll have to
remember not to take a drink when I'm reading posts from retards. And
to think I actually like Brits. My favorite tv show of all time is Dr.
Who which I grew up watching. I have always treated British people
with the utmost respect as I thought they had a clue about treating
other people properly. Nice to see that the Brits aren't as perfect as
I thought they were and have their fair share of clueless jack asses
like we have here in the US. Guess it goes to show someone can give a
new meaning to the phrase "clueless ****" as you just took it to an
all new level. Congratulations! Thanks for ruining my opinion of the
British people. May your King whip you and take away your birthday,
Mister I'm too good for the rest of the world. And again, thank you
for proving me right. You have got the worst case of inferiority
complex. Does your boyfriend beat you at home leaving you wanting to
take it out on someone you don't even know just to make yourself feel
better? They do have doctors that can help you with your love life you
know. Please, do yourself a favor and seek medical help right away
before you hurt yourself. That or just kill yourself and save yourself
a large medical bill. The funeral expense will be a lot cheaper in the
    long run.

Reaching pretty far out there, bud.
Ever heard of Hawaii? Florida? Probably not... If your brain matter was
axle grease, there wouldn't be enough in your head to grease the dynamo
on a lightening bug's ass. Face it. Your friend either lied or applied
    the lacquer himself. Badly.

From the sounds of this guy the only "good" American in his eyes is a
dead one. Sounds like he is such a wonderful person someone would
want to know. And I thought I had issues. <g>
