I had it happen twice at Donington Park Circuit in August, I maintained
a steady throttle position and steered slightly into the slide whilst
leaving my body position exactly where it was. I survived both slides
intact. I was riding my Gixer Thou, the modern UJM, at the time. I'm no
riding god, that was my first time out on a track.

90% of riding is subconcious, if I try to think about what I'm doing I
    crash.

  2. Right. It's much nicer to feel the rear starting to slide out
(besides, an inch feels like a foot) than it is to feel the
front close, which means you've lost front tire adhesion.

And back to a prior thread -- countersteering is how you
turn a bicycle or motorcycle. There isn't another way, unless
you're going at walking speed, in which case you steer it like a
    tricycle.

Once a bike is heeled over, you can certainly steer with
the throttle, if you have excellent throttle control.

Not always true, you could "steer" a motorcycle by bouncing it off
nearby street furniture. It's a technique MattG seems to have almost
    perfected.

  5. I never could understand the fascination with trucks as personal

And the idea of a "sports" truck was such an oxymoron....

  6. You know, I am *so* tempted to take you up on that, having done
something very similar with a couple in NM in 1988 (and we've all
    remained firm friends ever since).

I wonder what my Ducati would cost as excess baggage??

    I once had a 1992 Ducati 750SS; a very nice motorcycle [1]. By the
time you arrive for our fall ride, I will have another ... a 2007 S4Rs
which will be delivered in May or June. Perhaps you would like to ride
it rather than one of my friends' Trophies? It makes no difference to
me, really. And it would save you the expense of transporting your own
    Ducati.

Oh, I don't know. My "sports" truck seems to get around quite well...

    http://mysite.verizon.net/alliesfolks/Tim/DSC_0051.JPG

It's a crude old thing, but the silly duffers around here in their BMWs
and Porsches and Corvettes and Honda S2000s and WRXs always seem to be
    holding me up.

Perhaps it's just that they simply can't (or won't) drive!

BTW, my "sports" truck gets all of 9.5 miles to the gallon; quite good
    for a 7.4 liter motor with a 3-speed automatic transmission and a 4.11
final drive in a 2-ton box-shaped package. But, it sure is a whole lot
    of fun!

He is right, on those occasions when I've made a concious effort to
study how I ride it's been a revelation. I do things without even
thinking about how or why I'm doing them, but the bike goes where I want
it too and I very rarely fall off.

You haven't ridden with me ... and the bottom edges of my floorboards are
rusty , cuz all the chrome got ground off somehow . The bunch I ride mostly
with all live in the Ozarks of northern Arkansas , and we like to think
we're fairly good on the corners . I have yet to drag hard parts though ,
    gotta keep tryin' .

You haven't ridden with me. My Harley "bagger" has Progressive
Suspension shocks and front springs, cartridge forks, floating brake
rotors, stainless steel brake lines, 96 rear wheel horsepower, 106
    ft-pounds of torque, a 6-speed transmission, and I like to think I'm
    fairly good in the corners:

    http://mysite.verizon.net/alliesfolks/Tim/FlaminDucRacing/Tim_Daytona_Ducati_Leading.JPG

But, what the hell would a Harley owner/rider know about going fast, or
going around corners, or riding long or far, right?

ROTFLMAO.... at you, "Bear!" Your infantile, narrow minded,
stereotypical "thinking" fits in well in ukrm.

Never let the facts get in the way of a good stereotype!

We have 2 pubs within 10 miles of Reading called "The Black Boy", a
reference apparently to Charles (I or II) who had a rather dark
complexion... The one near Hurley does good food...
