If it wasn't lacquer then what the **** was it that flaked off when I
turned a pressure washer on it? I don't know if HD coated the engine
casings on bikes destined for export to Europe or if you ever owned a
1990 883 Sportster from brand new but I do know with 100% certainty
    that those casings were lacquered.

Do you want me to post pictures of my then 2 year old daughter sitting
on the bike or will you just retract your statement that I'm a liar
    without me wasting my time?

I really don't even want to admit to owning a Harley but I did. As
I've said before, I really wanted to enjoy owning it but didn't. None
of the complaints I made about the Harley were made up but I notice
you didn't argue about any of the other ones.

How do you think I knew about the stupid indicator wires being routed
under the mudguard where the tyre could wear through them unless I
owned the bike? It's not as if it's something Harley would advertise
    themselves is it?

Heh, I've just been having a look at a photo of the bike to see if the
crap peeling off shows and it does but it's not very clear. There was
a coating of some description on the engine casings and on the airbox
cover. It was almost like a very thin plastic coating hence my calling
it lacquer but it could have been any old crap for all I care now.

Harleys are shit. They shouldn't be but poor workmanship and poor
quality control lets them down. It makes me laugh (as a union member)
that they used to have little stickers on the boasting about them
being union made in the USA.

I think this is bollocks, too. It might have been true-ish a decade or
two ago, but all the signs are that the immigrant communities are
growing further away from 'traditional' English communities, rather than
    melding with them.

  10. Ha! Well said, sir! All one has to do is compare the prices of goods
exported commonly to both the U.S. and to the U.K. to see how
circumscribed American's choices are when compared to the lucky U.K.
    consumer!

I'll bet you UK folks get GREAT non-tariff, non-import duty prices on
    the ever popular GSXR1000 superbike, don't you? £8,799 list price;
while in the U.S. those poor folks have no choice but to pay $10,849
!!!! That's $2,050 MORE in the U.S., no doubt due to those tariffs
    they impose!

But, wait.... I seem to remember that the British Pound and U.S. dollar
don't exchange at a 1:1 ratio, so it could be MUCH worse. Let me
    check....

Well, now, this can't be right! According to at least one currency
converter, $10,849 dollars U.S. is worth a mere £6,121.97 GBP. That
would seem to indicate that the same GSXR1000 imported into the U.S.
would cost only 70% of what it would cost in the U.K. !

How could that be, with the U.S. imposing tariffs on foreign imports to
protect their home markets and reduce consumer choice?

How could it be that the UK, along with the other EU countries,
maintain a 10% common external tariff on all non-EU import vehicles?
Doesn't the enlightened UK want its citizenry to enjoy a competitive,
level, automobile market? And then, there's that pesky 17.5 percent
Value Added Tax applied to imported vehicles. I suppose that the
"Value Added" was by virtue of those vehicles being unloaded at a U.K.
    port!

Meanwhile, the U.S. levies a 2.5% tariff on imported cars and
motorcycles, and a 25% tariff on imported pick-up trucks.

    You lucky Brits!

Unseasonably cool for us here (Florida) also with frost on the grass this

You're tarring everyone with your own worn out toothbrush. I'm 43, I
find my Gixer superbly comfortable, it gets serviced at 6,000 mile
intervals, I use it hard and it gives me no problems at all. If you
can't ride for shit and can't afford the maintenance, don't assume
everyone else can't either. I like bikes that go well, stop well and
handle well and on top of that they have to look good too and be
comfortable and reliable, whilst at the same time being affordable,
which is why I don't buy Harleys and never will.

  15. This on the basis of having owned one example of the complete bottom of
the line, price leading XL883. When did you own it?

I've owned modern Japanese, Italian, British, and Harley-Davidson
motorcycles. The 1997 and 1999 Triumph models I owned were better made
and used higher quality fasteners than the two 1992 Ducatis I owned
(spanning the range, a 750SS and an 851 Superbike); which in turn had
better paint and anti-corrosion plating and chrome than the 1991 and
    1994 and 1996 Japanese bikes I owned. The 2004 and 2006 Harleys I've
owned have better paint, better chrome, better build quality and better
fasteners than any of the other bikes listed, except for the quality of
the nuts and bolts securing the clamps on the exhaust system and the
chrome covers on the exhaust system. I'm convinced that Harley skimps
on the stock exhaust system quality on purpose because they know their
customers immediately rip off the stock exhaust and throw it on a shelf
or throw it away, and bacause the low quality there is so incredibly
and quickly apparent compared to the extremely high quality of all the
other bits and pieces on their bikes.

As far as reliability, all nine bikes listed have been completely
reliable in that none has ever stranded me anywhere. The Harleys have
much better standard warranties, and only the 1999 Triumph (Speed
Triple) and the 2004 Harley ever needed warranty repairs. In both
cases, the repairs were quickly effected by a local dealer at no cost
to me. There are, however, a lot more Harley and Honda dealers to
choose from than Ducati and Triumph dealers. Something to consider
while on the road, far from home.

The only crap modern vehicle I've ever had was a 2001 BMW automobile
which I bought new and sold before its 4-year warranty expired because
it was ALWAYS in the shop, even though I never even hit the 20,000 mile
    mark on its odometer.

    Yes.
First it was done by an individual dealer, not the parent company.
Second it was done inthe country of origin
Third, the price at home was not more then the p[rice in a foreign
    country.

Honda was dumping product in the US for far less than it was selling
it elsewhere and especially at home. This at a time before much of the
product was built or assembled in the intended market.

Excellent:) I was in Sydney and in between beers, I went out for a breath
of air. These folks where having a political rally and chanting "so and
so's a wanker". I asked the "totty" standing next to me what a wanker was.
She laughed and made a back and forth motion with her hand. Local
    Colloquialisms are the shit!
