Oh, hang on a cotton-picking minute, that boy! At least we're getting
reasonably well formatted replies, with some context left in.

My whine about the sending ST to the knackers yard thing is that most
of the inflammatory stuff seemed not to come from ST himself, but he
    was still copping the flak.

A bridgeport , ah but I dream ! Haven't got room right now for a full
sized machine , but I can fit a tabletop model . The Taigs look really
nice - and pricey too , IIRC . Been kinda looking at a HF (yah , I know ,
most of their stuff is crap) unit with a square column ... we'll see what
the profit sharing check from the cabinet shop (I do high end commercial
millwork) is like . The bridgeport will come later , I have a bit of land in
the country that I'm going to put a shop with semi-attached house on <grin>

Speaking of which, I caught a bit of a documentary on Discovery the
other day that suggested the last execution by "Madame Guillotine" in
Frogland was as recent as 1972!

Feck me, I thought that was a tad barbaric and would have died out a lot
    earlier than that.

    Apparently ...

The last official use of the guillotine in France was in 1977. On the
10th of September Hamida Djandoubi was executed.

So long as the HF will hold register when you move the head vertically
it'll probably be fine (depending what you want to do with it). What
taper does it have for toolholding[1]?

Most of the restrictions with the small machines (for the hobbyist) come
from the restricted movement in each axis. Having to do a job in several
steps (carefully setting up between each step) get old *very* fast.

I'd have a wander into rec.crafts.metalworking, were I you. The politics
and bullshit make reeky look like the Elysian Fields, but there is some
    good info there too. ;^)

[1] You're going to spend as much again on tooling[2], check that you
can buy appropriate stuff easily. Ebay can be your friend here.

[2] But you know that from buying the lathe, right?
