I bought my first Jap bike circa 1963 - a Honda Scrambler then a SuperHawk.
Both had clear lacquer or something on the cases, etc. My last Honda was a
SOHC 750. It also had clear something on the cases. So does my wife's 600
Kwacker and my Suzi cruiser. Jeezus, IIRC her TZs had painted cases.

I've been trying not to get involved in this thread, because (a) I don't
know anything about Harleys and (b) it's been a bit dull, but this bit's
    interesting so here goes ...
The economics of the vehicle market do not, however, simply reward
cheapness. If they did then companies like BMW, Mercedes, Lexus and Jaguar
would have folded or started making cheaper vehicles long ago.

If Americans chose to buy Japanese and, indeed, still do so then is price
    the only motivation?
And, of course, thanks to Government intervention (to the tune of millions
of tax-payers pounds) in our car industry we can still buy Triumphs,
Austins, MGs, Rovers and a whole host of other makes*. They also wisely
invested our money in DMC, which was a winning scheme**.

So on that record if our government had intervened we'd have even less of a
bike industry than we've currently got.
And I, for one, am happy for you, but I do think you're over-simplifying the
    economics of the situation.

    * All of these marques are defunct, in case you didn't know.

** And I assume you're aware that DMC went TU as well.

Mine's eight years old, done 27,000 miles, and has eaten one spark
plug[1], two neutral light switches, and one idiot light bulb.

It's on the original battery and even brake pads.

  14. I think you're being a bit harsh. Sure a lot of Jap bikes are identikit,
but there are some characterful ones out there.

We were talking *Harley* cases. No lacquer. Ever. Even on the export
    bikes. The dood lied.

Maybe not lacquer but certainly a coating of some sort, unless HD use some
sort of black metal to make their engines out of.
