Because it was an endurance race, Clem, and no-one was silly enough to
seriously think they would go the distance.

depreciate too rapidly) then buy a rarity.

Or just give in to the fact that money spent on a vehicle is money down the
drain and learn to accept it :)

    Yup, except the V12 came out in '73. 3.8 then 4.2L 6cylinder 200-250Hp
depending on spec. The V12 was low 300's with a dead flat torque curve
    - you can get a lot more ponies out of them by making the torque curve
peakier (the Broadford XJC from 1974 was 650 at the rear wheels with
just cam and head changes - bore and stroke stayed the same.
Geez mate, the 2.4 6cylinder and 2.5 V8 managed 150Hp and they were
    bottom of the range !!
Just you keep your keys in your pocket heathen !!

The Mk2 - which had the same motor, did, with Bob Jane at the wheel
63, 64 if i remember correctly. Beat a heap of big block V8s. E type
as a two seater sports car would have been in a different division to
the main event I think the Geoghegan brothers punted the etype fairly
    successfully.

Bzzt wrong. The Xk 6 cylinder not only did go the distance at bathurst
a number of times, it won LeMans on 4 occasions beating the cream of
the world's cars - not just the limited field contesting Bathurst....

    JL
(and a whole heap of other race victories - shame the Jaguar badged F1
cars are a bunch of losers)

I confess my sarcasm was a bit astray, but I'll just have to live with that
and move on, as they say.

I used to watch Bob Jane in the Jag at Calder, trying to get past Beechey's
sideways Impala. A friend of my dad also used to do the hill-climbs in a
3.8S, Templestowe, Rob Roy etc, and his main competition was the then-new
    Valiants.

The Jags were starting to struggle for reliability then (they weren't
factory machines like the Le Mans efforts).

I have vague memories of the 3.8 Mk2's getting sorted fairly often by
Cooper S's.....but that was back in Pommieland.

Did any of them race at Bathurst about the same era with the Jags?

A stock 100Kw Coralla feels to me that it would sort a "modded" Cooper
S, assuming both on street tyres.

Give us a shout when you get the Mk2 going and we'll call for
    timekeepers! :)

Perhaps it would be fairer if you borrowed the E-type though.....then
we'd both be scared of getting it wrong! ;-)
