Why do people (only 1 I can think of, actually) keep going on about this bike?

    http://www.sportbikez.net/showcase/34

80hp, 189kg... My R6 would eat it on any track - and lets face it, the RC45 wasn't built with any other purpose in mind. What on
earth is so special about it and why would idiots pay large sums of money for it?

    Was it me?

This site says 97hp measured at the back wheel (USA)
    http://www.ohiosuperbike.com/andy/rc45cw6.pdf
...and this site says that site was testing a restricted one and it's actually 118hp
    http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~john/vfr/specs/94-95-rvf750.html
but the road specs are not really important as the bike was merely a homologation special so Honda could win
the World Supers (and Aussie Supers and AMA Supers etc etc.).
They just had to have a road-bike that they could point to and say "our Superbike is based on THAT"; hence the
fact that there are very few on the road.

  4. There's a whole lot more to a bike than it's specs.

Didn't quite phrase this correctly... why would anyone _now_ pay large sums of money for it? It has lounge room collection cred,
sure (despite being rather ugly IMO) but I can't see much else there.

Silly question, really. People blow all sorts of money of nostalgia trips.

I think the Aussie horsepower is trading at .65 US at the moment... (But if the Gobert-index can get back up
    and competitive that should increase).

Vincent Black Shadow, green-frame Ducati 750SS, Kawasaki H2R, Manx Norton, AJS Porcupine, 'Guzzi V8 and Honda
    6...
All of them would be slower than your R6. (Same as a '70 GTHO or a '65 E Type Jag would be slower than a new
    Corolla.)
Next year this year's R6 will be worth ****-all but true classics will probably be worth more.

The money's not "blown" if it appreciates.... (unlike your R6).

AJS Porcupine, 'Guzzi V8 and Honda
Type Jag would be slower than a new
But there's a 1954 500cc Manx Norton doing the rounds at the clasic meetings
that does low 41's at Eastern Creek
Not bad for a 50 year old steel framed, drum braked, 500cc Single with
    skinny treaded tyres!!

Alot quicker than most r6's can get around

Totally - I understand that perspective. But I struggle to believe that the
net return on owning an RC45 beats even an ING direct cash account. ie
subtract all the costs of storing it, keeping it secure, clean, rust free,
absolutely unridden, etc - all the things needed to ensure it doesn't
    _depreciate_.

    A GpZ900, though, that's a different story entirely ;-) Real classics
    appreciate heaps mate.

other purpose in mind. What on
Because it has little to do with power figures nor lap times. It's about supply and demand. And the
demand side of the equation can be affected by many variables.

Hell, a numberplate went for well over half a million dollars just the other day, and it can't even
get around a track under it's own power!

Just goes to show, some people don't care about the superficial, throw-away mentality where if it's
not the latest and greatest or the the most powerful, it ain't worth spit.

I think nostalgia would be a big part of it. If it was a Ducati, Mr Rich
Wanker would buy one and put it in the lounge room, without needing to know
anything about it, and people would look at it and go "oooh aahhh" and see
the Ducati badge, and know why it was on display and Rich Wanker wouldn't need
to know anything more than it is a Ducati and it is probably red and maybe
even looks nice. I think a bike like the RC45 on the other hand, being a lot
more obscure for the non motorcyclist who looks at it, would cause people to
ask "why do you have this in your lounge room?" and thus prompt the Mr Rich
Motorcycle Enthusiast who owned it to rattle off a great list of achievements
for such a humble looking motorcycle. A talking point more than a looking
    point perhaps.

Went out to a Friday practise session some time ago, and the Manx was
out with a couple of "local heros" on R1's.

The Manx was passed by the R1's about half way between the start/finish
line and Turn 1......_every_ lap! ;-)

I have actually been tempted to "borrow" Angie's wee Corolla (auto with
air) and take it out to Eastern Creek sometime.

Can you lay hands on an E-type John?

I agree. (On another thread I said "buy a painting")
But if you want a MOTORCYCLE that appreciates (or at least; doesn't depreciate too rapidly) then buy a rarity.

    Are you serious; 250-320hp for a standard '60s E-Type?!!?
I was guessing more like 100-150!!
    OK; scratch the Jag.
