Second or third generation dole monkeys, brought up with an endemic
    absence of aspiration.

If a bird knows nothing beyond its cage, what's at fault, the bird or
    the cage?

Either way, I really do blame the parents / upbringing. It self-
    perpetuates.

I'm also from a single parent family. What I was kinda pointing at was
the the failure of any kind of aspiration.

I dunno about that, I've always been about as aspiration-free as it's
possible to get. Christ knows how I've managed to coast this far by
    accident.

(You must have done something right. Yes, you, the lurker I'm sure will
read this at some point like some freaky middle-aged stalker!)

Umm, if having food to eat, a roof over my head and not being miserable
are goals, then yes. Otherwise, not really. But I'd have thought *most*
people take those kind of aspirations for granted these days.

The question is why those basic aspirations aren't there though. It's
not a spontaneous thing, it's years or generations of decline. The
people you're seeing on that program are the product of that
degeneration, not the cause. As such, it's hard to blame them.

Do I qualify for the BHALC yet?
The mrs had it on a couple of times. I can appreciate his effort, but
the tv prog is just voyeurism. "Look at all the poor people". If your
reaction is anything to go by, it hit its target.

Sure, some people can drag themselves out of the swamp, but other
people sometimes need need a kick up the arse. Or, at least, their eyes
opening to the idea that something better is possible.
"Seriously though, I have never seen a bigger collection of more
    unappealing, ignorant cunts."

That's not exactly what I'd call a dissertation on social decline.

I saw a couple of episodes when the mrs had it on. If I hadn't, I
    wouldn't be commenting on it.

  14. The problem is, living in a shithole like so many of the old industrial
towns is knowing where the opportunities lie outside of it. Many do just
take the great leap into the unknown, but so many others are afraid of
change or just can't leave because of commitments.

I think back to when I was stuck in similar shitholes in the Central
Belt of Scotland - I was lucky enough to be free to just bugger off, and
    did.

After last night I can assure you that Wigan has more people wearing
shellsuits and borstal tattoos than anywhere else I've stayed.

That sucks, at the time I set this one it didn't occur to me that it
might catch a bird. I suspect there's many more rooks in the world
    than falcons as well.

I've not seen the program but I have been to Rotherham some years ago
on several different occasions. It wasn't quite as grim as Hull from
my recollection but that's not really an endorsement.

There was a bit on my local TV last night about a couple whose six sons
are all currently in prison. It's "not their fault", apparently.

I *so* wish I had the power to call up an air strike.
