I bought some poison at my previous gaff and stored in ready for use.
When I came to deploy it the fuckers had broken in and eaten the lot.
On a high shelf out of the way around 500g of poison grain just
disappeared with only a corner nibbled to give a clue.

    I assume you've considered the take-off-and-nuke-the-site-from-orbit
    option?

Hmmm... I'd have to check our insurance policy to see if it covered us
in the event of a nuclear strike.

Good point, and not one I'd considered. The house if very unlikely to be
covered if you press the 'launch' button yourself, IWHT,

I spent hours with the living room window open and air rifle at the
ready when I was living in Puxley and I never got a clear shot at the
pheasant that used to wander around in the cornfield at the bottom of
the garden. I'd see the corn moving and hear the bastard quite clearly
but never got more than a glimpse of it's tail feathers and I really
    wanted a clear head shot.

    Hell that's neat!

A nice idea would be a bigger version, connected to the mains
electricity, with some nice motorbike bait inside

I would have thought most air rifle pellets would bounce off. Of course you
could club it to death with the butt (feedlines R us). A crossbow might be
better although I'm told hunting with bows is illegal in this country for
    some reason.

For deer I'd always use the car option rather than an air rifle
pellet. We used to live near Woburn Abbey and the grounds are full of
deer but I don't think Adie would appreciate me throwing a few kilos
of road kill in the garage.
Hang it from the garage roof and gut it.

What if there was a trip wire, or similar mechanism, in the garden,
    tripped by the rat?

The problem with that is that I'd always be tempted to point it in what
be considered to be the wrong direction...

FFS, there's only been one spotted so far.

What sort of hovel do you have to live in that there are enough to get
    with an aerosol?
