Laura approached her car theory test with the blythe assurance of one who
knows all the answers and doesn't need to study. She failed by /one fucking
point/. If she had so much as glanced at the cover of the book[1] she had
me buy for her, she would have passed. She has been subjected to in-depth
discussions of this failure. It has been trotted out as an example on
several occasions, and doubtless will be again.

She now has the ambition to get her full bike licence, and a conveyance of
some sort to go with it, between now and the end of January, while coping
with the first term of university and the grinding poverty that comes to
those without money or income. She may achieve this, but I'm not holding my
    breath.

[1]Some sort of DSA book of theory test answers, now surplus to requirements
around here but possibly of use to your offspring. If it hasn't been
Oxfammed, I could stick it in the post.

It was a choice of puke in dad's Marina, or puke in my own Morris Minor

My mother used to stay awake until she heard my bike outside but I
never realised why until after she'd commented on me being late home
for what seemed the hundredth time and I started coasting down the
hill to our house with the engine killed and then sneaking in the
house so I didn't wake her. She was even more shouty the next morning
because she'd been awake most of the night waiting for me to get home.

After I'd returned home from my spell of contracting in SA I rented a
flat a few miles from my parents house but my route home from town
involved driving up the main road a couple of hundred yards behind
their house. I developed a habit of knocking the bike down a couple of
gears and letting the full race exhaust do it's worst as I screamed
through an 's' bend at about 70mph. After a while I realised that if
my parents could hear the bike so could every other fucker in the area
and sooner or later the cops would be waiting and might not like me
doing those speeds in a 30mph limit.

January? That seems a stupid time of the year to start riding bikes.
    Unless she has a plan...

Oh yes. I doubt anything will come of it. It's much more likely I will
    have a passenger.

Yes. Not a lot of use if it's deadlocked and chained though.

I've a holiday booked later in the year with eldest sprog, I've been
on at her to sort out some form of insurance since we placed the
deposit in January. XL fold[1] and I am sending a text again did you
    get insurance?[2]
The sprogs had an interactive type CD before their tests and this did
    actually get used and worked.

[1] swapped to thomas crook <yuk>
[2] she was planning to do it that day ;-)

I used to do similar so as to not annoy the neighbours. My then
Bonneville was fitted with dunstal silencers so was audible from a
mile or more away. Around the bend 400 yards from their place,
throttle open and then kill switch, the folks living on the bend must
    have been pleased.

Well sure, and taking the 'test' via the CD I think my worst was 33
out of 35 but then I'd been driving for a while. The odd 2 made no
sense to me, on other tests I hit 35/35.
