    You're wrong.[1]

Oh, and seeing as I've had a look at your headers, what's tin like
compared to slrn? I think I may have cause to start using a text-based
newsreader, for the first time in about 14 years, and I'm finding it
hard to come to terms with.

[1] In that you're not talking bollocks, that is.

    Whinging Courier says...
Acksherley, I think it was determined a while ago how the newsreader of
    the poster was configured.

    Or something.

Anyway, I altered mine to the guidelines set by Pip yet I still get
intermittent funny posts from Christofire, Des and Ginge. Note the
    intermittent bit..why is that?

It marks a post as read, once it's being read? Shocking behaviour! It's
a good job that no other news clients do that, isn't it? Apart from OE.
    And Mozilla. And Agent, Gravity...
Ta, but I don't think I'll bother - I'm hoping to not have to use it on
a regular basis, so I can't be arsed to go to much effort for it.

Right then - I'll persevere with slrn. For a bit.

  11. SLRN is the One True Newsreader. tin is an abomination spawned by the
Dark Forces of Evil who wish to Corrupt Our Morals, Destroy our
Fair Country and Enforce their Evil Will upon a Helpless Populace.
Thou mustest use SLRN. All else is vanity and a chasing after the wind.

You're a thick **** if you believe that UK supermarkets don't sell chicory.
    It's widely available.

  15. Quoted-Printable. quoted-printable encoding turns strange characters
into the =nn notation, and spaces at the end of lines qualify as
strange. Then it bungs header lines in to say

    Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-15
    Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable

or similar, so that other news readers know how to turn them back into
    the original squiggles.

If your newsreader doesn't understand these headers, you don't get the
conversion, and so will see =20 and similar QP droppings. If you
follow up to the QP article from such a disadvantaged newsreader and
quote the affected text, your article will go out _without_ the magic
headers, and so everyone else will see =20 here and there in your
followup even if they have a modern newsreader.
This displays on my system as a hollow rectangular box: my newsreader
understands the encoding, but I don't have the right font installed.
Or something. Finding out what exactly is right up there on my
"things to give a rats ass about - urgent" list.

Well, tbh if I had to choose between taking advice from Pip or you, it
    would be Pip.

    But you knew that anyway.
