    Sigh, more bafflement.

    Dear Foak.

There aren't many places on my lovely new dashboard to mount gps bits
and bobs. My first trip cost me an extra 50 freezing miles because of
my inept sense of direction. Plonking the satnav in the tank bag isn't
working because of looking at it and crashing.

So far the best solution I can *guess* at is:
    http://www.ram-mount-uk.com/ram-b-272.htm
Which may or may not be able to be molished onto the bit where the brake
    fluid reservoir mounts.

The switch gear on the bars seems too crowded to fit anything in
anywhere else, and the lack of any tubes to get a u-bolt round appears
to be a show stopper in that regard.

What collective knowledge is there that can shove me in the right direction?

    tia.

Bear got a RAM knobbly thing that bolts to the headstock IIRC. That was for
an R1, not sure if it will work on a Blunderpuss.

http://www.telferizer.com/prods.html#yamaha might be it - I'm assuming your
bike is pretty similar to the others on the list. Send Dr Bob an email

Lets see a photo of the cockpit - if I can mount a TomTom Rider on a
gixer thou using only the standard kit, it shouldn't be a problem on a
    sports-tourer.

    Blurry, but it might do:

Ugh. Cat, if you google for "thundercat forum" there are a few places
you could ask to see what others have used.

U-bolt clamp on the fork pre-load adjusters[1]. It's what I do on the
    MV & it works fine.

    [1] that's the blue bits cat :p

Now, I did *search* several of those forums, with little result.
*asking* on forums requires 80 pages of registration and frankly the
chance of a perfect answer from the clever people here is waaaay higher.

I had similar problems with the ST3. My solution might work for you but I
don't know the Thundercat well enough to say for sure. I solved it by
removing the rubber bung from the inner end of the right hand handlebar and
inserting a longish bar-end protector rather like this. .
    http://www.bikebits4you.com/images/universal bar ends.jpg
I then fitted the U-bolt round the projecting part of the bar-end. However,
before fitting I used a grinder to cut a locating groove in the bar-end to
reduce the risk of the mount either loosening and rotating whilst riding or
being pulled off by a scrote whilst parked up somewhere.

Why thank you kindly. I shall add it to the (very small) list of sig
    numbers I don't use (an OMF & a 2008WAMSY).

Dunno (and CBA to look) whether the 'cat has old-fashioned reservoirs, the
type with a rectangular lid and two screws? The ZZR does, so I made a
bracket (sort of a fat inverted-L-shape) out of 4mm ally plate with holes to
line up with the reservoir lid, a 45-degree bend and threaded holes for the
Garmin bracket mounting screws (lots of loctite), so far it's worked ok and
doesn't foul anything (Garmin sits behind the bars, inboard of the
switchgear), doesn't get in the way when topping up the clutch fluid.
    YMMV...
Took an hour or two to make using hand tools (bending it "tidily" was done
in the time-honoured bench-vice-and-lump-hammer fashion), plus drying time
for a few coats of satin-black paint[1]. If going this way, a cardboard
template makes it a lot easier getting the size and shape right and lets you
check for tank to satnav clearance etc. Stick it on the left if you're
likely to want to prod buttons on the move, for obvious reasons!

[1] to key the ally surface, plug the threaded holes with hot glue or such
and dunk the bracket in caustic soda, but not for so long that it
    disappears... DAMHIK

  14. That's threaded, isn't it? A bit of rubber sheet to protect the
threads would be in order. OTOH, the bolt-head is the same diameter as the
threads so you might be able to get a nut the same size as the thread and
run it down a` la a locknut -- opens up a few pissibolities.

Hmm, what's the Yamaha emblem hiding?

No visible threads, they are inside the fork leg
Nothing, it's just a small badge that all Thunderaces have on the top

Not the bit that sticks out, no. It's just got lines machined in so you
can get them the same height & gauge how hard or soft they're set.

I was given a link to a pdf on the ram site which suggests RAM-B-309-1U
specifically for the cat, which is the brake lever clamp bit. I think I
can get things arranged so that the satnav ends up just to the right of
the brake fluid bottle, nice and neat. It's not a touch screen, so
there's no need to poke it once a route is set.
