With the next rally, ride, pissup fix planned for the 17-19 July
(Apollo Rally), 4 weeks away, I desperately need to do something, any
suggestions?. All nonsensicle replies will be replied with the
    contempt they MAY deserve.

You can come over to my place this Saturday and help me replace the
    clutch in Minx's Daihatsu Applause?

(We're only 15km from Honeysuckle Creek).

BT, there's only one thing I can say about an Applause, throw the
clutch in a big fire and follow it with the rest.

I used to have an Applause. Great little car! (for a car).
I had it exactly 40,000km. I know this 'cause I bought it new and it was
written-off while it was having it's 40,000 service when the workshop (and
the dealership and pretty-much entirety of Chermside Qld) was flooded during
    a vicious storm.
I think you always remember more fondly the vehicles taken from you
    prematurely.

This one's up to 250,000km and still running pretty well. So far as I
know it's had the CV joints done about 6 years ago, and in the past
few years I've replaced the rear struts, exhaust system, front brake
disks, and now the clutch. For a 17-year-old small car with that
mileage, I think it's doing all right.

It's a nice little car to drive, too (particularly when compared to my
    truck). ;-)

I tell you what, it's a good job it doesn't need a new clutch every
    week...

I finished up the job on Saturday after about 6.5 hours[1]. I jumped
in and went to take it for a drive and... it wouldn't go into gear
because the clutch wasn't fully releasing. >:-[]

I started work on it again at 07:30 on Sunday, and had the gearbox out
by 09:00. A much closer inspection of the old and new driven plates
revealed that the drive flange on the old one had a steep taper to the
end of it[2], which the new one did not. 20 minutes careful work with
the angle grinder and a rat-tail file installed the correct taper on
the new clutch plate, I bunged it into the car and installed just
enough parts to allow me to start the motor and attempt to shift gears
with the brakes applied. That worked out just fine, so I refitted the
rest of the nuts, bolts cover plates and assorted folderol for a total
Sunday Wasted Time figure of just under 5 hours.

[1] Which I considered quite reasonable, given that the mechanic
quoted 4 hours labour using his fully-equipped workshop.
