Let's say you removed a radiator for a spot of painting and then when
you put it back a week or so later you noticed the bleed screw was
missing, where would you get another one? Would a DIY shed like B&Q
have them or would you need to go to a plumbers merchants? If you could
also imagine it's Christmas Eve so you don't really want to be chasing
around any more than you have to.

I could be in for a frosty[1] Christmas dinner otherwise.

I think you're going to need to find the original bleed screw, or buy a
new radiator. I'd be *amazed* if there's any sort of standard for size
    and thread on them.

I was afraid someone would say that and as it's you I'm even more
convinced it's time for plan B. Drain the rad in the study and nick the
screw for the dining room. (And then worry about it all after Chrimbo
    :)

Why not just tap out to the next size up, and use a regular threaded
    allen bolt in the hole?

Did you remove the bleed screw when you were draining the rad to remove it?
If you did, it's probably on the window sill, or with your tools.

    Good Plan.

But I did say ICBW, so it might be worth a phone call / trip to your
local Plumb Centre tomorrow (go early, they'll probably shut at lunch
    time).

If you don't want to plunge into the maelstrom of Cribbs Causeway on xmas
eve, there's a builders merchant in Thornbury that does a lot of plumbing
kit. GAP Supplies, top end of Eastland Road past the Health Centre, 01454
    412569. They /might just/ be open tomorrow.

Keep up, my problem this morning was "Where is the old one?" For
tomorrow it's "where do I get a new one?"

The old one could have been rolled up in the old carpet, be out in the
garden[1], in the garage, or numerous other places. But most likely it
will turn up when I next get a random tool out and it will then become
    my spare.

    [1] possibly via the dog.

Excellent, my first port of call before work then.
I'm really not planning to. At the moment everything is hunky dory as
the room is finished. She knows the radiator is not on but I've said I
will do it tomorrow and she is happy with that. Although only a woman
would think it normal to refill a rad *after* fitting a new carpet but
    there you go.

Cribbs Causeway - now there's a pointless shopping mall. It doesn't
    even have a bookshop!

Actually there is. You can usually buy all these bits in B&Q Warehouse.
I got some self bleeding screws for ours in there, and they were only
about £2 each, all a straight swap.
