RACQ membership / flat tyre

    Riding home the other day I saw a poor bloke tottling along on his
    rims cause his tyre was completely flat. I wouldve stopped but there
    was nothing I couldve really done to help him.

    It got me thinking as to what I'd do if I got a flat or other problem
    I couldn't fix on the spot. I have comprehensive insurance with Swann,
    but am not sure if that covers towing and so forth. And if I did need
    it, who would I call? Is it worth getting RACQ membership on top or
    can I get RACQ to give me a tow and just pay a one time fee? Would
    Swann pay the fee?

    What do others do? aside from riding around on your rims :p

    Join RACQ - it's cheap, and it's worth it. Flat tyres can be fixed by
    roadside if you really want to, but when your shaft drive uni joint
    starts making "crunch, crunch" noises, I'll take a tow, thanks!

    If i was in that situation i'd ring all my mates with trailers or utes and
    see if any of them could get their arse out there and pick me up

    Although I am not allowed to take pillions yet (yeah he couldve ridden
    my bike I suppose, but hey, give me a break, plenty of other people
    just whizzed past). Besides it was in st lucia, there was plenty of
    buses running, houses around with phones etc... He might have had a
    bit of air left in his tyres, so stopping him wouldve just let them
    deflate more, and might have caused more harm than good actually :p

    As for a puncture repair kit, isnt the spanner needed for the axle nut
    a bit big to carry? The gas might be a bit big too. I'd rather just
    call someone than dick around for ages.

    If you have a Honda , then you can join the Honda Rider Assist , the
    Gold membership costs $55 PA and the platinum $99 PA , they will do
    roadside repairs and towing ....etc

    In SA we have RAA same as RACQ /NRMA but the membership follows person
    not the vehicle so we are covered what ever we are riding or driving.
    They don't normally fix punctures on road will give air or get a free
    tow

  10. So enjoy it while you can - RACwa used to have that system -
    2 of us sharing a car - both had to join.
    Now me alone with 2 vehicles - both vehicles have to pay tho
    I can use only 1 at a time.

    They do now join motorcycles, and use the local motorcycle tow companies
    who are very helpful.

    IF you have tubeless tyres....

    Me, I carry a socket to undo the axle nut. It's not the spanner that's
    big and difficult to carry, it's the tyre levers.

    Doesn't work with tubes, so those of us stuck in last century still
    have to remove our tyres. Well, partly remove.

    Look, you'll either get a flat somewhere, or nowhere. If you're
    somewhere, odds are someone will turn up and give you a lift.
    If you're nowhere, that phone is pretty fucking useless anyway,
    right?

    If you're into travelling in dark, mysterious places, learn to
    fix a puncture!

    Ok, thanks everyone. I have tubeless tyres and have heard of the
    foam/gas cylindars (sp), but didn't know about the plug type repair
    kits that don't involve having to take your wheel off.

    I will prob join up with RACQ but the site isn't too helpful esp for
    mc. Will prob just go in and talk with them.

    RACV has a bike membership, but unlike SA if you have any other bikes or
    cars you have to pay individually. Someone scores well there. SA has the
    best system, the person is covered. I am only able to ride 1 bike at a time.

    If you join up "when you need it" on the same call, it costs you about $130 or something stupid.
    but the way around it i've been told is to call RACQ (well it im in nsw, so nrma for me) and join up
    and then call up roadside assistance 10 mins later . im 24 and it costs me $63 membership/yr.
