Race numbers - legal for a road bike?

I've heard from many sources that it's illegal to display race numbers on a
road bike. Is this still the case?

I ask after seeing numerous scooters about with Rossis numbers on, is it
something to do with their number size/placement?

    Cheers

I found a thread from 2002 but no one had an answer.

    Thanks

By this logic it would make all the Beetles with "53" on the doors and
bonnet illegal; all the new minis with "69" (yawn) on the sides and rally
    cars on road sections.

In short, IMO, no its not.

When I find my bloody copy of Butterworths I'll drop the "IMO".

I was always led to believe that displaying race numbers on the Public
Highway was naughty. Exclusions apply for competing vehicles on road
sections, but all the (rally) Regs I've read state unequivocally that
the numbers "must be removed or covered" once the event has finished
or the vehicle is no longer competing (limping home after dropping
    out, for example).
In Regs like that, the word "must" means just that.

As to displaying on a private punter's vehicle, I can't see it -
unless they would be assumed to supplant the registration number plate
by a witness to an accident, perhaps, so possibly misleading the
    public.

Having said that, I believed that displaying a blue light (1) on a
vehicle was punishable by a station stepping, so I know fuckall,
    obviously.
I'd be interested. Idly, mind, so no rush.

    1. Or any colour other than white to the front (unless flashing amber
    indicators).

That's Rally regs rather than Construction and Use. I can see why they'd
want to make the distinction between a competing car and a non competing
car but I think that's nothing to do with road going legality.

If the registration is obscured by the race numbers or a tow bar for taht
matter then an offence is being committed. But to say numbers on vehicle
are misleading would result in vans having to remove telephone numbers
    and the like.

I've been had for "showing other than a red light to the rear" not quite
    the same I know.

I'd be interested in where its gone, I haven't seen for ages. I may have
    lent it to someone.

    I'll hunt the fucker down.

    Ergo it's not true.

I've also read in bike publications that Honda were to introduce a range
    of supercharged V-twins.

I've definitely seen it stated in bike magazines in the past that race
numbers are illegal. If true, it can't apply to factory paint schemes,
else the Aprilia Haga rep & MV Ago couldn't be registered.

Your dentist's waiting room still has copies of "Bike" from 1981?

No offence at all - contrary to urban myth. It started years ago when
non-competing cars moving between rally stages had their numbers
crossed out but that was organisers regulations rather than law.
there is no offence in displaying race numbers at all.
