Well ... swilled out and emptied the the tank on the R80RS with some petrol.

Then did the same with the float bowls, filling them with fuel before
popping them back on the carbs.

Attached a car battery and jump leads.

After about 10 seconds of turning over the old girl fired up! And settled to
a good if slightly lumpy idle.

Not bad seeing as it hadn't run since about 2000 or so!

So now on to full service, sort out the brakes and a good front to back
    clean :)

Went to the R45 and did the same .... but it wouldn't respond to the start
button so either the relay is not working or there's some other electrical
gremlin. Given its not fired up since about 1992 it's allowed to be grumpy I
    guess :)

  2. My R60 does that too. Mind, there's not a lot to go wrong.

  4. hehe. I was thinking in carb, ignition etc. terms. Mine has slide carbs,
    not CVs, of course.

True. Of all the things[1] that I've had go wrong on airhead boxers, carbs
have not been among them. Mind you, it's a mono, so the coil will be
    cracked and letting in water.

[1]Valves losing their heads, big ends going to ratshit, clutch, starter
motor, loom, a succession of oil pressure switches, rotors, partial
seizures, cracked subframe, aforementioned coil etc

  6. I gather the 1000s are more fragile, mind. Summat to do with all the
airheads using the same bottom end, was over-engineered in the R50 with
    about 35 BHP...

  7. I don't think the problem with the 1000s is really to do with the engine
bit. If the 1000s have probs, it's usually gearbox-related (same gearbox
fitted to everything from the R60 to the R100).

R90s and R100s tend to be a bit more leak prone around the barrels...

It should only be very slight though. We tried lots of things in the 80's
with the iron lined barrels and decided that occasional cleaning was best!
The nikasil barrels can be properly oil tight.

  10. But can't be rebored...

hmmm. worth a shot I suppose: if anyone has a decent pair of airhead heads,
I'd be interested. Mine have issues with valve guides and valve gear (some
of the rocker bearings are not what they might be) - it's either replace the
heads or get them refurbed properly...

'course, I could fit 750 or 800 cc barrels and pistons at the same time with
    little extra work :)

  11. My old 1978 RS had a very slight staining around the base of the
    barrels, I recall.

Well .... a long time back I had a conversation with a plod bike mechanic
who reckoned they'd mic'd up some barrels from a very high mileage nickasil
bike and there was virtually no measurable wear so reboring isn't really an
    issue.
Just get in touch with Motorworks, I'm sure they'll have all the bits you'll
    need.
Is this the 600 you've been fixing for about 5 years now ;)

  14. yeah, but they'll want money for them. more, probably, than a half-decent
    s/h pair.
Yep. To be fair, it's still running, but it's losing a bit of power and
    smoking on the starboard pot.
