My girlfriend bought a V reg R6 private (1) and 1500 miles later it will
only select 1st or 2nd gears. Would I be right in thinking she has bent the
common selector fork as they are soft as shite and built to win the race and
do a cooling down lap? What else could it be?

    (1) Poor girl been after one for ages and after finally making her dream
happen it knackers after 3 weeks. She is distraught.

Check the gearchange ratchet/pawl detent spring behind the squareish
case where the splined gear lever shaft is. Breakage is a common fault
on early R1s, and I'm led to believe the R6 can suffer the same. The
parts cost about a fiver and it's easy to repair, but make sure you get
all the old bits of broken spring out.

Was that what went on Bear's R1?

Yep. Heard of R6s doing the same, but not seen one myself. It took me
half an hour to sort on the R1 and cost a fiver for the spring and
gasket. The symptoms the OP is describing are the same as Bear had with
his, so it's worth looking at before anything else. If anything, looking
at this is relatively cheap compared to pulling a gearbox apart.
