I've read elsewhere that it causes an ABS fault - doesn't sound real well thought out.

  2. someone on ADVrider.com with a new R12GS tested it. if you hold the
brakes while starting it, it starts with the ABS in a partially faulted
mode (you have brakes, and minimal servo assist, but the ABS is off).
soon as you release the brakes, and roll, it finishes the selftest cycle,
and resets, and the ABS is reenabled.

If it's anything like my R-RS, then holding the brakes while starting
caused the brakes to be in fully faulted mode - No servo assist, no ABS.

When you release the lever, the brakes re-run their test and enable
servo assist, but not ABS. This is the same mode as if the brakes were
not applied during startup. As soon as you pull away, the ABS will
    complete its test.
