R100 tuning

    My 82 R100 ‘s engine has two cylinders “Leftie” and “Rightie”.
    They get on amiably at idling, the fight like cats and dogs between
    1500rpm & 2500rpm.
    They are most harmonious at 3000rpm to3500rpm, they bicker slightly at 4000.
    This makes 100 kmph the smoothest ride but city speeds of 40, 50, 60
    kmph annoying (must use 3rd and 4th.
    a lot in city)
    I doubt that they will ever get on in complete harmony

    So strip the carbs, clean them, replace needles and nozzles and
    diaphragms if you need 'em, balance them properly. If the throttle
    cables are cracked at the ends you'll need to replace them too to get
    it to stay in balance.

    The bike will be a lot nicer to ride and the parts pay for themselves
    in petrol saved. It's not rocket science.

    Idle is not out
    third and fourth have an iritating slight whine.
    this is the onle vehicle that I have ever had that top gear would never
    be used in city riding, driving (top gear is not really happy till eighty)

    I'm yet to see a vehicle that *is* happy in top gear in city riding.

    Well, maybe a Daimler pre-selector, but the fluid flywheel does aid a bit there.

    You should have bought an 1100 with some torque. Try a Honda next time
    :p

    Austin 10.vanguard.toyota crown,renault dauphine gordini, austin a40,
    daimler consort. (preselector)fiat 1800.austin1800.mini minor.honda
    accord.toyota dyna.commadore 3.6
    would tootle along in the 60 to 70 kmph in top as long as you were not
    going uphill or accelerating heavily(all cars but so did my honda 550
    years ago)
    The auto commadore changes into top before 60 if you are not
    accelerating hard

    I have had this bike for 22years and I know it is not a car I was just
    saying that it is the only vehicle including 5 bikes and one scooter
    that I need to being doing 70 plus for it to be really happy in top
    Ps I was not trying to start a fight just making comments

    I ride around in whatever gear is appropriate. The XX is quite happy
    accelerating from 60kph in top gear, if that was the question you were
    actually asking.

    And you said any bike will be unhappy in top gear under 80kph, and I
    said the XX is quite happy in top gear at 60kph and now apparently
    you've changed your mind, said your bike is happy, but that is not what
    we're discussing.. well I'm afraid it is what we're discussing. In
    fact your response to the OP discussed nothing but that.

    the ride will be smoother.

    I'll agree with that. After owning the bike for how many years, he seems
    to be whinging about it's smoothness at low revs....<shrug>

    Now, maybe, it does need a decent tune up and clean out and balancing of
    carbies....

    And twin plugging, an essential modification on the R100 series (had it done
    on my 1991 R100RS and my 1993 R100GSPD).
