Quietest Helmet

  1. IME Schuberth S1 + ear plugs. Google for my earlier proclamations on
the subject; to which I would add the R1200RT screen is better than the
R1150RT screen in terms of wind noise/helmet/ear plugs interaction.

    Hardly surprising, is it?

I mean, who else makes box-shaped helmets?

I find that wearing earplugs while riding in town gives the same kind
of sound level as driving a car with the windows closed.

"Among the current incarnations is the System 5 model, which - like all
BMW helmets - exceeds the safety requirements of the standard ECE Norm
22-05. Virtually all helmets have a six-fold, segmented EPS inner shell
to ensure perfect density for the damping elements aligned to each of
six potential impact zones. The weight of all helmets is kept to a
minimum for enhanced riding comfort. For example: the System 5 helmet
weighs less than 1700g; the SportIntegral 1350g; and the SportIntegral
Carbon under 1000g - the lightest integral helmet in the world."

The normal Sportintegral is 1350 grammes, not all that light really. The
1kg model is the Carbon Sportintegral which is 1250 Euros, approx 800
    quid.

Before you decide to throw that much cash at a helmet, see if you can
find a BMW dealer that also stocks any other brand of helmet and then
compare the quality of fit and finish between the BMW Carbon helmet.

I'll guarantee you won't buy the BMW, unless of course you are
    completely round the twist.

Grassy Knollington scribbled on the back of a napkin:
Well, you may want to try a BMW dealer. Just, like, a hunch.

Oh, and I wasn't referring to the Carbon one - the normal one is
expensive enough and the 250-odd grams between the Carbon and the
regular one are pretty much irrelevant IMHO.

  18. Has anyone tried the earplugs intended for use on pistol/rifle ranges?
Reports (not *THOSE* reports!) have it that you can hear pretty well,
people speaking normally, etc, but reports (yes, *THOSE* ones) are heard
    as a muffled 'THUD!'.

They have a small direct channel right through, but there's fine
diaphragm inside, and this closes when a loud noise impinges on it.

I don't know whether the diaphragm would remain closed during a
sustained high noise level, or whether it is only activated by the
pressure sudden loud noises. 'Fraid I have never tried them as I've
always just used earmuffs which had a similar system, using flat fibres
    in the sound-insulation layer.

In that earplugs.gb sample pack that I bought last year there was a
kind of paper style earp that seemed to let vocal levels through, but
they were horrid and I threw them away after half an hour.

  20. Dunno - as I said, I use earmuffs, but they tend to be difficult to wear
    under a bone dome.
