Lozzo scribbled on the back of a napkin:
I know you said "usually" up there and that's probably the "get out"
clause here but there are still very valid reasons why people would ask
    for a quiet helmet.

For example, I do wear earplugs on the bike all the time even in town,
but I'm still trying to buy the quietest possible helmet as I'm rather
sensitive to noise and I've had migraines triggered by that kind of
    noise.

Not saying you're wrong, just pointing out that there may well be other
valid reasons why people are trying to reduce the noise levels inside
    the helmet...

What would you suggest to me then, who already wears SN36 rated ear plugs
but would still like a helmet that is quiet?

My aversion is to the WIND noise - not bike noise. I have two helmets at
the moment - a Shoei Z-One and ScuBerth Concept - the Z-ONe is *miles* more
pleasnt to use than the concept - because it's quieter and has much less
buffeting noise. If someone were to ask me for a quieter helmet, I'd
recommend the Z-One, because it is quieter.
If you, as a salesman in a bike shop, told me to stick to the car, I'd make
damn sure I'd never go back to your shop as you obviously don't care for
either the wants of your customers, or their money IMO.

I think the whole point of the thread has been wind noise, not bike
noise. And your plugs may be SN36 in a laboratory, but that's
meaningless if they're not the right shape/size for your particular
ears, or you don't push them in far enough.

so apart from shows where these days can you buy uvex lids from? I've
searched the web and can only find websites selling the push-bike versions.

I got my Species at the NEC from a dealer who's name I can't remember -
    something like Pidcocks I think.
    http://www.bikestyle.co.uk/shop/?Cat1=469&Cat2=265 lists the Wing.

If you buy it mail order then you should be able to return it under the
    distance selling regulations.

A helmet is obviously designed to have a head inside and they seem to
damage more easily when empty so this is probably more of an issue than
    test rides.

Certainly, here are the T&Cs for a random retailer, look under
    cancellations:

Of course you are still liable for *all* the postage costs.

Z-Ones are shite, see the Ride test. Throw it away

One would imagine that they are looked after very well. Most people
that work in helmet shops are likely to be motorcycle riders and if
they started selling damaged stock people would not go there.

If I ever fancy putting on a new helmet I've always asked if it's okay
for me to try a few on. The answer has always been yes, of course.
I'm always rather careful (perhaps too careful) with helmets. I touch
them down gently and keep them where they're unlikely to come to any
harm. Bumping down ones helmet three of four times a day on a desk
over a year (I imagine) can cause quite a lot of damage, so I'm also
careful when putting helmets back on a shelf in a shop.

Yes I saw that - however the one I have is from a vintage where it _passed_
    that test.

Good for you - your personal amusement wouldn't stretch to relieving me of
    my cash though.

Part of being 'awkward' (or asking for what i want) I guess. :)
