Time to get me a new helmet me thinks. I sway neither towards arai or shoei
size head, both seem to fit me fine and are comfortable, so that out of the
way, what's the quietest helemt vs price?

I'm not a fashion following power ranger and I don't care what colour or
season it came from (in fact I've always bought last seasons pattern cus
they are normally that much cheaper) hence it needs to be cheap enough but
quiet enough as I'll be doing 100 miles each day. I'll be using earplugs as
    well though.

  2. well my Uvex WingRS is pretty quiet, especially with earplugs in, and it
was only £45 at the BMF, thanks to a tiny chip in the paintwork.

I think that's pretty quiet for the price.
Lozzo of course gets his cheaper.

My Caberg is quiet with earplugs. £99 retail I think. I got mine in
    the sales.

With respect, if you use the right type of earplugs for your ears & fit
them properly, the difference in wind noise between helmets will be
    irrelevant.

With respect, that is utter bollocks.

Another factor is the seal between the bottom of the helmet and the
neck. If I use a neck roll then this also makes a big difference.

No, it's not. With your ears properly plugged, even the noisiest of
helmets on the windiest of bikes just results in a faint background
whoosh that's nowhere near loud enough to damage your ears.

IMO Of the two, the Shoei is the quieter.

    No, it is bollocks.

With the same earplugs properly fitted (laserlite), my Arai is far
noisier than my new Shoei. With my head in certain positions, the Arai
    will shriek like a banshee.

I'd say you need to carry on searching for the perfect earplug for you
then. I've tried numerous types, all of which worked to a certain
extent, some of which I though were very good, & then I discovered the
EarSofts which were a revelation. You could stand 3' away & talk to me
& I literally wouldn't be able to hear a word you said.

If I can achieve near silence with a particularly noisy lid (a flip) on
a bike that directs the airflow straight at my head with the screen on
the lowest setting, I'm sure anyone else can.

I'm not saying you won't be able to tell the difference between a noisy
lid & a quiet one, just that even the noisiest will still be so quiet
    it won't be an issue.

Matt Horn scribbled on the back of a napkin:
    If you've got an Arai-shaped bonce, try a Schuberth S1 - they're
considerably quieter than both Shoei and Arai IME.

Tis true, but getting one of the little buggers to stay put all day
without drugs can be a prolem.

I've tried several different type, including the custom fitted kind. The
laserlites provide the best noise reduction for me. Having said that, I
have not tried the earsofts but will have a go if I find them here.

Can you hear traffic though? I mean, it would be nice if you could hear
    horns and sirens.

Hmm, and there I was about to get one of your "This is the quietest lid I've
ever used" products. And with you telling me that my Schuberth was a really
    noisy lid.

    Should I not bother then?

No guarantees they'll work for you obviously, or anyone else. For
example my dad swears by the plastic mushroom type, but they're the
    absolute worst for me ears.
I can't hear normal traffic noise, or bikes in front unless they've got
race cans. I don't know about horns & sirens - it's not the sort of
thing that would stick in my memory. But I'm sure I'd hear them if
    close enough.
